Currently in development, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new RPG set in the Star Wars universe, taking place long before the events of the films. It’s considered a spiritual successor to the popular original Knights of the Old Republic game. The project is led by Casey Hudson, who previously directed Knights of the Old Republic at BioWare. Hudson has recently assembled a strong leadership team with extensive experience, indicating a high level of anticipation and effort behind this upcoming title.
Currently, very little is known about how Fate of the Old Republic will actually play. It could stick closely to the RPG systems of the original Old Republic games, or it might adopt a more action-focused style like Final Fantasy 7 Remake. However, the team now working on the game suggests some exciting possibilities for players.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Has Announced Its Leadership Team Of Seasoned Developers

Arcanaut Studios, the team Casey Hudson built for his new project, Fate of the Old Republic, has added a lot of experienced developers to its staff. It’s no surprise that many of these new team members previously worked with Hudson at BioWare. In fact, developers who helped create some of BioWare’s most beloved games are now taking on important roles in this new venture.
- Dan Fessenden – Senior Technical Designer
- Malanie Faulknor – Director of External Development
- Caroline Livingstone – Director of Production and Performance
- Ryan Hoyle – Chief Technology Officer
- Pascal Blanché – Art Director
Key developers like Hoyle and Fessenden were central to the original Knights of the Old Republic and have brought that experience to this new game. Other team members, such as Livingstone, also worked on classic BioWare titles like the first Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights. Several people who contributed to the Mass Effect series are involved as well, including Fessenden, Faulknor, Livingstone, and Royle, all of whom worked on different aspects of the trilogy during their time at BioWare.
The current direction of the Mass Effect series doesn’t truly represent the contributions of these developers, who were key to making those sci-fi games so popular. They also bring a wealth of RPG experience – for example, Blanché has worked on the art for games like Myst IV: Revelation, Runescape, and Far Cry: New Dawn. While fans are eager to learn who’s writing the story for the new Old Republic game, this talented team is certain to bring a lot of expertise to this new Star Wars project.
Creators For This Game Have Backgrounds In Several Of BioWare’s Biggest Hits

The backgrounds of Arcanaut’s team members already gives them the knowledge to work in the Old Republic timeline of Star Wars, as many of them took part in creating it. Although the MMO and sequel to the original game took that era of Star Wars in new directions, leaders like Fessenden and Livingstone have personal experience in bringing the first Knights of the Old Republic to life, creating the unique sci-fi setting’s aesthetic from a visual and technical standpoint.
Although some of the original developers are involved, the game isn’t overly constrained, as other team members clearly bring a wealth of broader sci-fi experience – particularly from their work on Mass Effect. While Hoyle contributed to all three Mass Effect games, Livingstone and Fessenden were key to the first, demonstrating a history of building sci-fi universes from scratch. Furthermore, Faulknor’s experience with Mass Effect 3 shows an understanding of how to develop sequels effectively, including bringing in passionate external contributors.
Drawing on experiences from games like Dragon Age and other fantasy series could help this project avoid common sci-fi clichés and find fresh inspiration. Star Wars is particularly prone to repeating itself, so bringing in creators with diverse backgrounds is vital for keeping the series innovative. Fortunately, the team behind Star Wars: The Old Republic seems highly capable and understands what makes Star Wars so beloved.
