Star Wars’ Canceled Kylo Ren Movie Got Further Than Any Other Rejected Pitch

Despite the huge success of Disney’s Star Wars films – four out of five have earned over $1 billion worldwide – many planned projects have been cancelled. Lucasfilm has officially announced numerous movies that ultimately didn’t happen, and recently, details emerged about another one: a spin-off called The Hunt for Ben Solo. This film would have paired Adam Driver with Steven Soderbergh, the director of his movie Logan Lucky. Surprisingly, the project wasn’t scrapped due to creative disagreements with Lucasfilm. Driver revealed that Disney itself passed on the idea, and Soderbergh has now confirmed that The Hunt for Ben Solo was a unique failure within Lucasfilm’s history.

Director Steven Soderbergh shared on Bluesky that a complete script for The Hunt for Ben Solo had been written. He explained he asked Lucasfilm president Kathy Kennedy if Disney had ever rejected a finished script, and she confirmed this would have been the first time.

Lucasfilm Has Had Numerous Problems With Star Wars Scripts

The ongoing search for a writer to tackle a Ben Solo-focused story is especially confusing given Lucasfilm’s track record with Star Wars scripts. For example, they announced a movie called New Jedi Order at a Star Wars event in 2023, but it’s gone through several writers since then. George Nolfi is currently working on it, but there’s no confirmation it will actually be made. The film doesn’t have a release date, as the script is still being developed. New Jedi Order isn’t the only Star Wars project that’s stalled – Kathleen Kennedy is still waiting for a finished script for Taika Waititi’s movie, which was first announced over five years ago.

With Star Wars remaining so popular, Disney executives are likely disappointed that so many planned projects have been cancelled due to problems with the scripts. It’s quite surprising, then, that Disney rejected a completed script that Lucasfilm really liked. After the somewhat negative response to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Disney decided to release fewer Star Wars movies, but the break has lasted longer than many fans expected. There almost certainly could have been space for a new film within the last six years.

Adam Driver explained that Disney rejected The Hunt for Ben Solo because executives couldn’t accept the idea of Ben Solo being alive after his death in the sequel trilogy. Neither Driver nor director Steven Soderbergh have revealed any specifics about the story, so we don’t know if there were other reasons for the rejection. It’s strange, though, because fake-out deaths are common in big franchises, and Soderbergh probably had a good reason for bringing the character back. Despite the support from those involved with Star Wars, Disney didn’t approve the project, and it’s unclear why until more details are revealed.

The Star Wars sequels weren’t universally loved, but Adam Driver’s portrayal of Ben Solo/Kylo Ren was a standout character, largely thanks to his strong acting. A solo movie focusing on this popular character would have been a natural fit, especially with a skilled director like Steven Soderbergh involved. Soderbergh has a history of making successful films, including franchise hits like Ocean’s Eleven for Warner Bros., and would have brought a lot of potential to the Star Wars universe. While reports suggest Driver is finished with Star Wars, Disney should think again if there’s significant fan demand for a project exploring Ben Solo’s story.
