With the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu just weeks away, it’s become apparent that the film has a surprising secret regarding its villain. After the conclusion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the franchise is returning to theaters with a new adventure for Din Djarin and Grogu. The pair first gained popularity on Disney+ through The Mandalorian and have quickly become fan favorites in the latest era of the Star Wars galaxy.
Over three seasons of The Mandalorian on Disney+, audiences have followed the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu, a unique father-and-son pair. Since Din first found Grogu (known as ‘The Child’), they’ve experienced a lot and met many different characters, both helpful and dangerous. Now, as they make their first appearance on the big screen in the film The Mandalorian and Grogu, Din and Grogu will face new challenges and meet new people, including Ward, a leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers played by Sigourney Weaver, and Rotta the Hutt, played by Jeremy Allen White.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Doesn’t Have An Interesting Main Villain

With the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu getting closer, Disney and Lucasfilm are ramping up the marketing. Following a unique Super Bowl trailer, they’ve now released a full trailer, giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect. The trailer and other promotional clips show Din and Grogu traveling the galaxy to track down Imperial leaders after the fall of the Galactic Empire.
While The Mandalorian and Grogu is full of villains – including gangsters, criminals, and monsters, as Din Djarin points out – the movie doesn’t have one central, overarching bad guy. The trailers suggest Rotta might be the main antagonist, which fits with the Hutts’ history of villainy in Star Wars. However, their conflict seems to be simply part of a job Din and Grogu are hired to do, rather than a personal battle, making Rotta feel like an insufficient threat to carry the entire film.
Unlike previous seasons of The Mandalorian, the new film doesn’t seem to have one central villain. Instead, Din Djarin and Grogu face a series of different enemies throughout their journey. This makes the film feel more like a collection of individual adventures than a large-scale summer blockbuster, despite Disney and Lucasfilm’s marketing. While The Mandalorian previously featured encounters with iconic characters like Ahsoka, Bo-Katan, and Luke Skywalker, this new film appears to be returning to a more basic formula of bounty hunting, based on what we’ve seen in the promotional materials.
The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Lack Of Main Villain Could Be Intentional

It’s perfectly fine for Star Wars to delve into the world of crime. After focusing for years on powerful figures like the Jedi, Sith, and leaders of the First Order and Empire, it’s a welcome change to see stories about more ordinary characters. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu already handle this type of story well, and this film feels somewhat unnecessary as a big-screen experience. In fact, it arguably would have worked just as well as another season of their Disney+ series.
The absence of a truly compelling villain in The Mandalorian and Grogu could be intentional, part of a larger strategy by Disney and Lucasfilm. The Mandalorian successfully drew viewers to Disney+ for three seasons, and now that the streaming service has more content, Disney might want to recreate that level of excitement for future Star Wars movies. This idea is strengthened by the fact that it’s been seven years since the last Star Wars film.
Rather than being the end of Din Djarin and Grogu’s journey so far, the upcoming film could actually launch a new chapter. It might feel like the first movie in a potential trilogy, offering a lighthearted and enjoyable adventure when it arrives in May 2026. Disney could then use this film as a springboard for further big-screen adventures with the pair over the next several years.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
