For two decades, Star Wars fans have debated who would win in a battle: Darth Vader or his former self, Anakin Skywalker. Anakin was destined to be a uniquely powerful Jedi, potentially even surpassing Yoda. However, did becoming Darth Vader prevent him from reaching his full potential? George Lucas himself seemed to think so, as he shared with Vanity Fair in a 2005 interview.
George Lucas noted that Anakin Skywalker had the potential to be incredibly strong. However, after becoming Darth Vader, he lost limbs and was partially replaced with robotic parts, which limited his Force abilities and overall power. Despite these limitations, Vader became a formidable dark side warrior, defeating many Jedi. This has led fans to debate who would win in a fight between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader.
Star Wars Has Finally Given Us The Impossible Battle

In Adam Christopher’s new Star Wars novel, “Master of Evil,” a surprising confrontation between Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker reveals a hidden truth. Darth Vader stumbles upon a strong dark side anomaly while traveling through hyperspace, triggering a vision that forces him to confront his former self. The resulting encounter is incredibly exciting and demonstrates that Darth Vader retained more power and complexity than previously thought.
I can’t believe what I’m witnessing. The fight just goes on and on. Vader is incredible with a lightsaber, truly a master, but this young man… he meets every single attack! It’s like he anticipates Vader’s every move. His dark robes are just a blur as he dances around, blocking and striking, pushing forward relentlessly, and then defending, again and again. It’s an endless exchange, a breathtaking display of skill.
The duel is an even match. There will be no winner, no loser.
There cannot be.”
The idea of Darth Vader fighting Anakin Skywalker presents them as two sides of the same coin, perfectly balanced because they are the same person. This fight can’t be decided by Force ability, as Darth Vader embraced his limitations while Anakin never fully realized his potential. Skill won’t matter either, since both were incredibly well-trained and knew the same fighting styles. A duel between Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker would have no winner, and it’s simply impossible for one to defeat the other.
Is This A Secret Aspect Of Balance?

This might connect to the concept of the “balance of the Force,” first presented in The Phantom Menace. However, the idea has changed considerably since the original prequel films. George Lucas initially envisioned the dark side as a destructive force, like a cancer, that would ultimately wipe out all life if not controlled. In this view, Anakin Skywalker was meant to eliminate the evil of the Sith. But the Mortis arc in Star Wars: The Clone Wars suggested a different understanding – that both light and darkness are actually essential parts of maintaining balance in the Force.
The brief appearance of Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka season 1 suggested a complex portrayal of his character. Ahsoka encountered Anakin’s Force Ghost within the mystical World Between Worlds, a unique convergence of the Force. This Anakin wasn’t a typical Force Ghost; he embodied both the light and dark sides of his nature, with a striking moment showing his form briefly transform into Darth Vader. Throughout the season, Anakin appeared as a beacon of light amidst darkness, and conversely, as darkness within the light.
Anakin Skywalker might actually be the balance that was often hinted at, like a perfect harmony between opposing forces. The title ‘Master of Evil’ suggests Anakin and Darth Vader are two sides of the same coin – equally powerful, and neither can truly destroy the other. This idea shows darkness controlling light, and light holding back darkness. It’s a different way of looking at things than the Jedi Order would, but it feels surprisingly fitting. Ultimately, when Anakin confronts Darth Vader, there won’t be a clear victor.
