Ever since Star Wars Eclipse was first announced, reports of problems with its development have been ongoing. Now, over four years later and after the cancellation of Spellcasters Chronicles, sources at Insider Gaming say the project is stuck in “development hell.”
During a conversation about potential games at the next Xbox Games Showcase, the speaker mentioned things aren’t going smoothly. They specifically said that Quantic Dream is looking to separate from Netease, possibly by selling the studio. They don’t expect to be surprised if a sale happens before the end of this year, or sometime in 2027.
Things aren’t going well, actually they’re going very poorly. There’s a lot of frustration surrounding the situation, so I wouldn’t anticipate any major changes. If they say anything, it’ll likely be just a statement confirming they’re still operating.
According to reports, Quantic Dream was relying on the success of Spellcasters Chronicles to fund the completion of Eclipse. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out, and the servers are now scheduled to shut down on June 19th. This is especially disappointing considering Eclipse, a free-to-play 3v3 game, reportedly took eight years to develop.
To make matters worse, the game developer is restructuring internally, and this could lead to as many as 95 employees losing their jobs. Because the situation is still developing, Quantic Dream hasn’t been able to provide details about how significant the impact will be.
Although a stunning trailer for Star Wars Eclipse might be shown at events like Summer Game Fest or the Xbox Games Showcase, current information suggests the game is still several years away from being finished.
It’s a difficult time for fans who enjoy story-driven Star Wars games, especially with both this game and the Knights of the Old Republic – Remake facing challenges. However, there’s good news regarding Arcanaut Studios’ Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Project lead Casey Hudson has assured fans it will be released before 2030, and that it will be a reasonable length – not exceeding 200 hours – and won’t use generative AI.
