In the Star Wars sequel series, there are numerous elements that have sparked disagreement among fans, but a specific scene from “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” remains controversial and sparks ongoing debate. In this movie, General Hux, portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson, is unveiled as a secret spy, providing intel to the Resistance while working within the First Order. This surprising revelation has left some fans puzzled, trying to comprehend how a hardcore First Order officer like Hux could aid the heroes in their cause. One Reddit user even commented, “That part was so poorly executed I can’t remember anything else about it.
In the case of “The Rise of Skywalker,” it received less favorable critiques among the sequel trilogy, primarily due to a lackluster screenplay. However, there are numerous fans who aren’t troubled by the Hux storyline. As discussed in Reddit forums, Hux wasn’t driven by selfless motives when he turned spy. Instead, his goal was to weaken Kylo Ren, who rose to the position of Supreme Leader following the events in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Some fans even highlighted a line spoken by Hux, which reads, “I don’t care if you win. I need Kylo Ren to lose.
To This Day I Do Not Understand how THIS GUY can be the spy

In “The Rise of Skywalker,” Hux’s storyline wasn’t unexpected. Throughout the sequel trilogy, there had been a palpable rivalry between Hux and Kylo Ren. They seemed to be at odds with each other as early as “The Force Awakens,” and in “The Last Jedi,” Hux showed nothing but contempt for Kylo Ren. It’s plausible that when Kylo attempted to blame Snoke’s death on Rey, Hux might have suspected Kylo was the true culprit. Given his unwavering loyalty to Snoke, it isn’t shocking that he would take steps against Ren.
In the opening scenes of “The Rise of Skywalker“, the Resistance learns that Emperor Palpatine is still alive, hidden on Exegol, thanks to intel from a covert agent within the First Order. During an attempt to rescue Chewbacca by infiltrating a Star Destroyer, Hux helps Finn, Poe, and Chewie escape. However, Allegiant General Pryde suspects Hux is a traitor and ends up executing him. Sadly, Hux meets his end due to old grudges.
In “The Rise of Skywalker,” there are some narrative hiccups, but the development of Hux’s spy plot isn’t a bad addition. It seems like a logical progression from the Kylo/Hux dynamic introduced in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” However, the Hux storyline in “Rise of Skywalker” could have been more fleshed out. The possibility of internal strife within the First Order ranks is intriguing, and it would have been engaging to see Kylo and Hux leading separate factions at odds with each other, enhancing the film’s depth and villain development. Unfortunately, in “The Rise of Skywalker,” Hux has minimal involvement, and his character could have greatly benefited from better writing. The concept of him attempting to challenge Kylo Ren’s authority and curry favor with the Emperor is intriguing; it just wasn’t handled optimally.
In the movie, Hux’s character might have been misunderstood by some viewers due to poor execution, but his intentions were explicitly expressed. It’s unfortunate that the twist in his character didn’t live up to its potential. Star Wars has a history of making stories about Imperials who defect (like Agent Kallus in Star Wars Rebels), and The Rise of Skywalker could have offered an entertaining take on this idea. Maybe someday, there will be a Hux novel or comic series that explores his attempts to overthrow Kylo Ren more thoroughly.
