The Game Awards 2025 featured lots of exciting announcements for new games alongside the award presentations. However, for many viewers, the biggest highlight was the first look at Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, which was revealed early in the show.

The upcoming Star Wars game, designed for PC and consoles like Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 (and future next-generation consoles), is a single-player action RPG. It’s set during the Old Republic period and lets players choose their path – embracing the Light Side or the Dark Side of the Force as they play.

Not much is known about the game yet, except that its trailer was created using Unreal Engine 5. What’s particularly promising is that it’s being developed by Arcanaut Studios – a team of experienced developers collaborating with Lucasfilm Games, and led by Casey Hudson.

As someone who’s been following RPGs and Star Wars for a while, I immediately recognized the name Hudson. He directed the much-loved *Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic* back in 2003, and was also a key figure behind the critically acclaimed *Mass Effect* trilogy. I even remember him contributing to *Anthem*, though unfortunately that game is being taken offline soon.

It’s fantastic news for fans of the original Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) that a new Star Wars RPG set in that era is in development after more than two decades. The developer, Hudson, has also reassured players on social media that the game, Fate of the Old Republic, is still on track and won’t be delayed until 2030.

Hudson addressed rumors that the game wouldn’t be released until 2030, stating it will be available much sooner. He clarified that development is still in its early phases, but added with a touch of humor, ‘I’m not getting any younger!’ implying a desire to see the project completed.

Ignore the rumors saying the game won’t be released until 2030. It’s coming out much sooner than that – I’m not getting any younger, after all! See the link for more: https://t.co/YKYQFgXOGR (Posted December 13, 2025)

The talk Hudson is referring to started with a post by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a video game reporter, who said that a release by 2030 is a hopeful, but possibly unrealistic, prediction.

According to Jason Schreier, the biggest news last night was the announcement of a new Star Wars game led by Casey Hudson, the director of the original KOTOR and Anthem. However, Lucasfilm has stated that the studio developing the game was only founded this year, making a 2030 release date seem unlikely – it might not appear until the PlayStation 7 is released.

The news about a potential release of Fate of the Old Republic before the end of the decade is promising, but it’s still unclear exactly when it will come out. While Hudson has said it’s coming “before then,” that doesn’t give us a firm date. I’d guess late 2028 or early 2029 is the earliest we might see it, but it’s hard to say for sure.

I’m hoping Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is released only when it’s truly finished. I have a lot of faith in Hudson and the team at Arcanaut Studios, and I want them to deliver a fantastic game. We haven’t seen a Star Wars RPG that reaches the same level of quality as the original KOTOR and KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords in a long time, and this new game sounds like it could be their successor. I’m really hoping it not only matches those classics, but even exceeds them.

I’m willing to wait however long it takes, even past 2030, to get a truly great Knights of the Old Republic remake. Fans deserve a high-quality game, and those take time to develop. Plus, with so many exciting games announced recently, we’ll have plenty to play in the meantime. Hopefully, we’ll even see remakes of the original KOTOR 1 and 2 eventually.
