So, I was reading up on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, and Casey Hudson, the game director, dropped some interesting info about how long it’ll take to beat. RPGs are notorious for being huge time sinks – games like Persona or Dragon Quest can easily eat up over 100 hours of your life! Even something like The Witcher is a good 50-hour commitment. But apparently, the team at Arcanaut Studios is aiming for something a little more focused with this Star Wars game, meaning they’re hoping it won’t take quite as long to finish. That’s good news for those of us with limited free time!
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Rod Hudson discussed his vision for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. He revealed that Arcanaut Studios will be a smaller, more focused team than previous projects, and this approach will also apply to the game itself. Hudson believes that a massive game doesn’t necessarily mean a better game, and that overly long games can cause players to lose interest – something he wants to avoid with Fate of the Old Republic.
Hudson pointed out that games don’t need to be incredibly long to be enjoyable. He explained that a huge game – even one he’s initially excited about – can be daunting. He worried that investing a significant amount of time, like 20 hours, might only get you through the very beginning of the game. Many players simply want the satisfaction of starting and finishing a game.
Okay, so I’m getting a feel for how long Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic might be, and it’s looking like a pretty standard RPG length. If it’s anything like other games Hudson’s worked on, we’re probably looking at around 20-30 hours for the main story. The first Knights of the Old Republic took me about 30 hours, and each game in the Mass Effect trilogy was in that same ballpark. Of course, I always get sucked into side quests, so it could take longer if I try to do everything, but it sounds like Hudson is aiming for something similar to what he’s done before.
We still don’t know when Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will be released or on what platforms it will be available. However, a previous statement from Hudson indicates he’s aiming for a launch before 2030, hinting it might arrive sooner than expected.
