Fans have always wondered why Palpatine focused on Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace. Palpatine never truly considered Darth Maul a real apprentice, viewing him more as a weapon to secretly eliminate Jedi. However, this plan failed because Maul misjudged Obi-Wan. Frustrated, Palpatine then sought out Count Dooku as his next possible apprentice.
Okay, so initially it looks like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were just casualties, collateral damage in the larger scheme of things. But the more I think about it, the more I’m convinced it was about Qui-Gon specifically. He wasn’t just any Jedi; he had a unique connection to the Force, and that’s how he found Anakin – he recognized the Chosen One. Even though the Jedi Council never fully accepted him, they clearly valued his insights, and his death really rattled them. It feels like, had he lived, his perspective on achieving balance in the Force could have actually prevented Anakin’s turn to the dark side. Honestly, looking back, Qui-Gon seems like a genuine danger to the Sith, a real wrench in their plans.
We Finally Know Why Qui-Gon Would Have Been Such A Threat

The tenth issue of Star Wars: Jedi Knights, written by Marc Guggenheim and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov, concludes a story arc where Qui-Gon Jinn faces a dangerous assassin from his past. The story reveals that years ago, while training under Count Dooku, Qui-Gon encountered criminals terrorizing the planet Sinsara. He foolishly accepted a challenge from one of them, Corlis Rath, and Dooku actually pushed him to give in to his anger during the fight. Qui-Gon used the Force, breaking the rules of their duel, and the criminals prepared to strike back – but Dooku unexpectedly killed them all.
This isn’t just a story about the past; it’s key to understanding Qui-Gon Jinn’s journey. He directly confronted the dark side, including his own struggles with it, and actively chose a different path. Qui-Gon dedicated himself to what he called “a higher path,” focusing on peaceful solutions and even trying to redeem those considered the worst villains in the galaxy. As shown in Jedi Knights #10, he was prepared to give his life to help someone find redemption.
Qui-Gon Jinn’s independent thinking and strong principles made him a potential danger to Palpatine’s schemes, which explains why the Jedi Council assigned him to handle the Naboo blockade. If he had lived, he likely would have become a powerful voice within the Jedi Order, questioning the growing Separatist movement. However, what truly worried Palpatine was Qui-Gon’s understanding of Dooku’s true nature. As seen in Attack of the Clones, the Jedi were unwilling to accept that a former Jedi could be working for evil, but Qui-Gon recognized Dooku’s potential for darkness and would have alerted the Jedi Council.
Palpatine’s Plans Would Never Have Succeeded if Qui-Gon had Lived
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always wondered if Qui-Gon Jinn could have saved Anakin from turning to the dark side. But reading the latest issue of Jedi Knights, it hit me that Qui-Gon wasn’t just about Anakin – he was a major threat to Darth Sidious’s entire plan! It makes so much sense now that Sidious would have targeted him early on. Qui-Gon was just too dangerous to leave breathing, and Maul was clearly sent to take him out quickly.
It’s ironic that Qui-Gon Jinn’s rejection of the dark side is precisely what allowed him to become a Force Ghost. The novelization of Revenge of the Sith by Matt Stover adds a wonderful scene where Qui-Gon explains how he achieved this kind of immortality. He points out that the Sith relentlessly pursue this goal but always fail because they focus on self-importance and power. True immortality, Qui-Gon explains, comes from letting go of the self, acting with compassion, and embracing love – qualities the Sith lack. By choosing this more virtuous path, Qui-Gon was able to live on even after death.
In a way, Qui-Gon Jinn’s death ultimately led to the downfall of the Sith. He discovered how to become a Force Ghost, which meant the Jedi’s wisdom and guidance could live on forever. Thanks to Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan was able to mentor Luke Skywalker from beyond the grave, helping Luke destroy the Death Star and eventually train with Yoda. This chain of events, set in motion by Qui-Gon’s sacrifice, ultimately determined Palpatine’s destiny.
