The first issue of Star Wars: Shadow of Maul clarifies what Darth Maul was up to between the end of The Clone Wars and the beginning of Maul: Shadow Lord. The Clone Wars Season 7 concluded with Maul escaping his cell during the chaos of Order 66, allowing him to evade Ahsoka and Captain Rex. He then used the distraction to escape the Star Destroyer Tribunal, which was meant to take him to Coruscant for trial. This escape paved the way for Maul to go into hiding and establish his criminal organization.
The first issue of Star Wars: Shadow of Maul updated fans on what Darth Maul was up to after The Clone Wars, filling in the gaps in his story and explaining what he did during a previously unknown period of time.

The story takes place in the early days of the Imperial era and follows Captain Brander Lawson as he attempts to enforce the law on the dangerous and corrupt planet of Janix, a world teeming with criminal activity and hidden secrets.
Though he didn’t show up until near the end of Shadow of Maul #1, Darth Maul’s first appearance was memorable and hints at what’s to come in Maul: Shadow Lord.
Darth Maul attempted to sneak into Janix, where he encountered a smuggler. The smuggler offered Maul chain codes – a way to assume any identity and avoid detection – as a bribe.

Rather than simply accepting help, Maul brutally kills the smuggler with his red, double-bladed lightsaber, marking his dramatic entrance into Janix.

Maul declared he was about to arrive in Janix, stating, “With my travel arrangements finalized… Janix awaits.”

This scene is important because it introduces the main conflict between Maul and Captain Lawson – the primary villain in Maul: Shadow Lord – and explains why Maul decided to use Janix as his headquarters.
The first issue of Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, a five-part comic series, sets the stage for the story told in Maul: Shadow Lord. It’s written by Benjamin Percy, illustrated by Madibek Musabekov, and colored by Luis Guerrero.
The new Star Wars series, Maul: Shadow Lord, will debut on Disney+ with a two-part premiere on April 6th.
Shadow of Maul’s Ending Has a Deeper Meaning
The ending of Star Wars: Shadow of Maul #1, where Maul kills a potential ally instead of accepting help, reveals his unwavering determination to rebuild his criminal organization and get revenge on the Empire, no matter the cost.
The recent Star Wars comic concluded by highlighting what makes Maul, Maul – especially his connection to being a killer – and hinted at his potentially menacing comeback in his upcoming Disney+ series.
Maul prefers to work alone, only partnering with Rook Kast when it suits his goals. This fits his character – he’s always been fiercely independent and doesn’t like relying on others, especially after being betrayed by the Empire.
Darth Maul’s willingness to kill without hesitation sets the stage for his relentless quest for revenge in Maul: Shadow Lord, ensuring he remains a formidable threat when he reappears in Star Wars animated series.
