Star Wars Finally Just Fixed a Kylo Ren Plot Hole

A large number of fans feel that Adam Driver’s portrayal of Kylo Ren stood out as one of the top aspects in the sequel trilogy, yet it’s hard to argue against the presence of a significant narrative gap concerning his character across the films, particularly in “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”. Interestingly, nearly ten years after the release of “The Force Awakens”, this plot hole was eventually addressed within the established canon.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when the latest installment of Charles Soule’s incredible “Star Wars: Legacy of Vader” comic book series dropped on September 8, 2025! This thrilling issue finally put an end to a longstanding mystery that started with “The Force Awakens”. In those films, we were led to believe that Kylo Ren was the head of the enigmatic Knights of Ren. Yet, in both “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”, these knights remained elusive, only briefly appearing in Rey’s flashback when she touched Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber. But now, thanks to this new comic series, we finally get to witness the Knights of Ren in all their glory!

In the movies, it seemed illogical that if Kylo was their leader, his followers would not have been by his side throughout the two films, instead choosing to remain hidden. However, as revealed in Legacy of Vader #8, their absence had a reason behind it.

In the comic, certain pages gradually disclose the past of the Knights of Ren prior to the events depicted in “The Force Awakens”. This backstory helps clarify why these Knights were absent alongside Kylo Ren in the film. The story is narrated from the perspective of one Knight, who recounts that they embarked on a mission.

The second panel on that page included an image of Kylo stabbing someone with his lightsaber.

Significantly, it was at this point in time that Rey had a vision on Takodana while wielding Anakin’s lightsaber, as depicted in the comic. The comic contains an image that mirrors a shot from The Force Awakens.

In the film, Rey didn’t witness what transpired following Kylo Ren’s killing of that specific character. But a later comic unveiled the true events.

As per the latest events, it was revealed that Snoke emerged before Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren. The narrating Knight confessed that although they had no faith in Snoke, his generous compensation led them to work under him. Yet, they also depicted him as a terrifying figure, akin to a monster.

Fundamentally, the comic implies that Snoke instructed Kylo Ren to abandon the Knights of Ren, referring to them as a group who were no longer fit to be in the company of either Snoke or Kylo. Interestingly, Snoke even used Force lightning on one of the Knights, causing them to collapse to the ground.

In a different scene, Snoke referred to the Knights of Ren as “vermin.” Surprisingly, Kylo inquired if he should eliminate them, which left the Knights of Ren startled, but Snoke advised Kylo not to squander his efforts on them.

The comic featured a battalion of First Order stormtroopers, ordered by Snoke to assault the Knights of Ren.

In the following scene, it became clear that the Knights made an attempt to defend themselves, however, due to the overwhelming number of stormtroopers, they were ultimately overwhelmed and outmatched.

Then, they had to make the ultimate decision to run for their lives if they wanted to escape death.

In essence, the comic book series titled “Legacy of Vader,” recognized as canon material, reveals that the Knights of Ren were absent in both “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi.” This is because Snoke, prior to the events of the former film, had exiled them from any association with him, Kylo Ren, or the First Order.

As a devoted Star Wars fan, I’ve long wondered about the whereabouts of the elusive Knights of Ren. Now, it seems they were evading the First Order, offering a satisfying explanation for their absence in the saga – something that many fans, including myself, have eagerly speculated about for quite some time now.

How Did the Knights of Ren Return in The Rise of Skywalker?

Given that Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren had a significant rift before the events of The Force Awakens, many may be curious about how they functioned as a unit within The First Order, following Kylo’s ascension to the position of Supreme Leader in The Rise of Skywalker.

In the final scenes of “The Rise of Skywalker,” it was revealed that the Knights of Ren had not been faithful to Kylo Ren all along. Instead, they were actually serving Emperor Palpatine. This became evident when, after Kylo turned back to the light and regained his original name Ben Solo, the Knights of Ren attacked him upon his arrival at Exegol.

It is plausible that the Knights of Ren joined forces with Palpatine following their encounter with Snoke’s army. Given Palpatine’s cunning nature, he likely managed to persuade the Knights of Ren to align themselves with him.

It’s quite possible that Palpatine introduced the Knights of Ren to the Final Order and managed to persuade them to follow him. When it comes to Kylo, he likely reconnected the Knights of Ren with him, offering Kylo the chance to lead them once more.
