Fans have long hoped for a third Star Wars: Battlefront game, but haven’t gotten it yet. Now, they’re channeling that energy into Fortnite. After Fortnite‘s battle royale mode became incredibly popular, the game evolved into a platform for many different experiences. While Epic Games recently had to shut down three of these modes due to layoffs affecting over 1,000 employees, Fortnite still boasts powerful creation tools like Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), allowing players to build their own games within the platform.
With the recent addition of official Star Wars content to Fortnite‘s Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), a group of creators called Good Gamers is building Frontlines, a Battlefrontstyle game within Fortnite. They’ve shared exciting previews on Twitter showing off recreations of famous Star Wars planets like Tatooine and Endor. Frontlines is scheduled to launch on May 1, 2026, right before Star Wars* Day.
Star Wars Battlefront 3, Finally?
The new game, Frontlines, is generating buzz simply because it’s a Star Wars shooter. Interest in 2017’s Battlefront 2 spiked last year alongside the excitement for the second season of Andor, leading to renewed calls for a Battlefront 3. However, despite the demand, EA currently doesn’t plan to make a Battlefront 3 after their first attempt was scrapped due to licensing expenses.
Many promising Star Wars shooting games have been canceled over the years. Respawn Entertainment had one scrapped, and a Call of Dutylike game called Star Wars: First Assault was canceled, only to reappear recently thanks to Xbox 360 emulation. Considering the multiple cancellations of Battlefront 3 and other projects, there’s a real opportunity for a game like Frontlines, even if it’s created within Fortnite*.
Star Wars Frontlines Is By Fans, For Fans
While not a complete substitute for Battlefront, Frontlines is a well-made game. Players familiar with Fortnite will quickly understand the gameplay, but the maps are clearly designed by Battlefront enthusiasts. The Hoth and Tatooine maps, in particular, closely resemble those found in both the original Battlefront games and the newer versions.
Because Fortnite now includes so much Star Wars content, Frontlines has the potential to feel like a full-fledged Battlefront game. The creator has taken inspiration from Battlefront’s hero-based gameplay and incorporated lightsabers and characters from the films. Initial gameplay looks good, but we won’t be able to play this Star Wars: Battlefront 3 alternative until Frontlines launches on May 1st.
