A Star Wars game has stopped working today, October 1st, meaning you can no longer play it. It’s quite surprising and disappointing that this happened so quickly, especially since the game only came out in 2024. However, since it was a free-to-play game, the situation isn’t quite as bad as it could be. Still, players who spent money on in-game purchases, or microtransactions, will unfortunately lose what they’ve invested after just one year.
If you don’t have a Nintendo Switch or play games on phones or tablets, this doesn’t affect you, as you couldn’t play the Star Wars game anyway. However, players on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android can no longer access Star Wars: Hunters, a free-to-play player-vs-player combat arena game that NaturalMotion and Zynga released on June 4, 2024.

No Reason for Shut Down
As many of you are aware, the last update for the game came out on April 15th, introducing a new character. Along with that, the ability to make purchases within the game was removed. This means that while some players unfortunately lost money on Star Wars: Hunters, no one has been able to spend any money in the game for several months now.
Zynga released a statement acknowledging that this news might be upsetting, and emphasizing that the decision to shut down the game wasn’t made easily. The statement reads, “Your passion and dedication to the game and its community have meant the world to us, and we are committed to providing visibility and updates throughout the transition process. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey and for the time you’ve spent playing Star Wars: Hunters.”
Honestly, reading through their statement, I can’t see any real reason why they’re shutting down the Star Wars game. My guess is it just wasn’t profitable anymore – the cost of keeping the servers running and providing support was probably more than they were making from those in-game purchases. That’s just what I’m thinking, though. It’s hard to say for sure what caused them to pull the plug so quickly, but that seems like the most likely explanation.
2024, A Bad Year for Star Wars Games
Last year saw the release of two Star Wars games: this one and Star Wars Outlaws. Honestly, it wasn’t a great year for Star Wars gaming. Hunters has already been discontinued, and Outlaws didn’t succeed with either players or critics. The future doesn’t look much brighter, either. There are two Star Wars games officially in development, but both are facing problems and don’t seem close to being finished. In short, it seems like fans of Star Wars games will continue to be disappointed.
