Star Wars Has Finally Completed Its 14-Year Fix for One of George Lucas’ Biggest Ever Mistakes

Long before fans debated the newer Star Wars sequels, the prequel trilogy faced a lot of criticism. Things like the awkward dialogue – remember Anakin’s complaints about sand? – and the character Jar Jar Binks drew a strong negative reaction. While George Lucas is now appreciated by many who feel Disney mishandled the franchise, the prequels initially got a lot of unfair hate, particularly towards the actors. It’s true the prequel trilogy wasn’t flawless, but the level of negativity it received was often excessive.

Okay, so the prequels definitely had some weird moments, right? Like, killing Padmé by having her just… give up on life? And Darth Vader’s “no”? Seriously? But honestly, the biggest problem for me was in The Phantom Menace. It was such a huge issue that Star Wars has been trying to fix it for fourteen years! And now, with the new show, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, they’re finally getting it right. It’s honestly the best correction they’ve made so far.

George Lucas Never Should Have Killed Darth Maul

There were many reasons why The Phantom Menace was so exciting. Star Wars fans had waited over ten years for a new movie, and they were eager to see what came next. But the film offered more than just a return to the galaxy far, far away. It introduced key characters and ideas that would shape the franchise for years to come, including a young Anakin Skywalker, a look at the Jedi Order at its peak, and the menacing Darth Maul.

Despite being a remarkably skilled, powerful, and frightening Sith, Darth Maul died by the end of the film. While his death came during an incredible lightsaber battle – the famous Duel of the Fates – which made it a little easier to accept, it was still disappointing that such a compelling villain died so quickly. Fortunately, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series brought him back, and many fans agree he became an even more interesting character as a result.

Star Wars Has Been Fixing This Mistake Since The Clone Wars

The twenty-second episode of The Clone Wars‘ fourth season, titled “Revenge,” surprised viewers by unexpectedly bringing Darth Maul back to life. While it required some explanation—specifically, how he survived being cut in half earlier in the series—the show cleverly used animation to initially depict him with artificial limbs. Most fans happily accepted this, and the story later revealed the Nightsisters of Dathomir used magic to fully restore his legs, bringing back a beloved villain.

Bringing Maul back wasn’t just about giving him more screen time. It allowed his character to develop significantly, gaining emotional complexity and a detailed story arc that went well beyond his intimidating but mostly silent role in The Phantom Menace. Interestingly, this also showed that George Lucas regretted killing Maul off, as he was a key figure behind The Clone Wars alongside Dave Filoni.

Disney’s Star Wars has continued to expand on Darth Maul’s story significantly. After appearing in The Clone Wars, he returned in Star Wars Rebels, where he searched for an ancient Sith artifact and tried to turn the Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger to the dark side, hoping to make him his apprentice. He even had a memorable duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Rebels, featured in one of the best animated episodes of Star Wars, and made a quick appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, his latest Star Wars series is considered the best portrayal of the character yet.

Maul – Shadow Lord Is The Best Maul Story Since The Phantom Menace

Disney+’s new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, showcases Darth Maul at his most compelling. Even with only the first two episodes available, viewers have been treated to exciting lightsaber duels, impressive displays of the Force, and Maul’s signature intimidating presence. The show appears set to delve much further into Maul’s history, focusing on his connections with criminal organizations, and a second season is already planned.

It’s good to see that both George Lucas and Disney have recognized their mistake in killing off Maul in The Phantom Menace. The character clearly has more to offer and deserves a bigger role in the Star Wars universe. Fortunately, fans won’t be short on new Maul content anytime soon. The first season of Maul – Shadow Lord continues with weekly releases every Monday until May 4th (Star Wars Day), and at least another season is planned – with whispers of even more content beyond that.
