A recent trailer for the upcoming Disney+ animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord, suggests a well-known Star Wars villain will make an appearance. The show will feature the Empire’s Inquisitors – Jedi hunters – chasing Darth Maul as he attempts to restore his criminal organization on the planet Janix. Although Janix hasn’t been heavily affected by the Empire, Darth Maul’s actions have drawn the attention of Emperor Palpatine, who is sending two Inquisitors – Marrok and the Eleventh Brother – to deal with him.
A new trailer for the upcoming Star Wars series, Maul: Shadow Lord, has been released on Disney+. It shows how Maul built his criminal empire on the planet Janix and features a fight with the Inquisitors. Notably, at the 14-second mark, Marrok – a character from Ahsoka Season 2 – appears in a hologram and tells his leader, “Lord, Maul Lives.”

Some viewers noticed that Marrok is reporting directly to Darth Vader about Maul’s condition. Given that Darth Vader is the leader of the Imperial Inquisitors in Star Wars, it logically follows that Marrok would be updating him in this scene from the Clone Wars continuation.
Some fans believe Marrok and the Eleventh Brother (The Crow) might be secretly working for Emperor Palpatine. This could be a deliberate tactic by Palpatine to manipulate Maul, knowing how much Maul despises him.
The brief trailer also depicted Stormtroopers entering Darth Maul’s base, which could threaten his plans to gain control.

One of the first glimpses we get in the trailer shows Devon Izara, who plays the central Jedi, facing off against Darth Maul. Now, the show’s been hinting at a potential master-apprentice relationship between them, but this scene pretty much confirms they’ll start as enemies – not exactly a shock, but still exciting to see!

Maul: Shadow Lord is set to have a two-episode premiere on Disney+ on Monday, April 6.
Is Darth Vader the Final Big Bad in Maul: Shadow Lord?

The story of Maul: Shadow Lord takes place a year after the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. At this time, the Empire is still establishing its control over the galaxy, and Darth Vader, newly transformed, is focused on important tasks for the Empire.
The newest trailer suggests Darth Vader will be a major force behind the Inquisitors, sending them to deal with Maul. However, if the Inquisitors can’t handle Maul, Vader might personally step in. While Vader and Maul have never fought on screen before, a showdown could happen in the upcoming series, giving longtime Star Wars fans what they’ve always wanted.
It’s also possible Darth Vader wouldn’t be sent to deal with Maul. Instead, Emperor Palpatine might choose to confront his old apprentice himself. This showdown between Palpatine and Maul could be intensely personal and emotionally driven, making it a particularly dangerous situation for both Sith Lords.
It’s almost certain that Maul will face off against either Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine in his new series.
