Electronic Arts (EA) and Respawn Entertainment haven’t shared much about the future of the Star Wars Jedi series since Star Wars Jedi: Survivor came out in 2023, but a new rumor suggests they might reveal something this year. During a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, host Tim Gettys hinted that a new Star Wars Jedi game is in development and could be announced soon.
Towards the end of the episode, Gettys mentioned he’d been considering what game wouldn’t appear on a particular list. He reflected on the reception of the previous game and believes the Jedi Survivor sequel is likely to be released this year. While not a certainty, he envisions a potential announcement in May and release in September.
Several commentators pointed out that the original Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was both announced and launched in the same year. Its follow-up, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, arrived just four years later. If a third game were to be released this year, it would mean a very short three-year development period.
Gettys went on to note that, “I’ve heard some things.”
Since the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Respawn Entertainment has experienced several staff departures, including the game’s director, Stig Asmussen, and also underwent layoffs last year. Patrick Wren, a senior designer on the game, publicly shared that morale within the studio was at its lowest point.
Honestly, it kinda stung to hear this news, especially since EA just had layoffs. They let go of over 300 people, including a bunch of folks on the Experiences team, and it all happened just a few days ago. It definitely feels like a tough time for everyone involved.
Stig Asmussen has started a new game studio called Giant Skull and is currently collaborating with Wizards of the Coast on a new Dungeons & Dragons game. He recently shared that the studio’s experience with close-quarters combat will result in smoother animations in this new title compared to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, because they’re starting fresh without any existing technical limitations.
Our team excels at close-quarters combat, something Wizards of the Coast president John Hight – who I worked with on God of War 3 – was able to witness firsthand, and it’s proving very useful for Dungeons & Dragons. We likely still have some lingering issues in the Jedi games stemming from early mistakes. These mistakes often happened because we prioritized maintaining progress over dwelling on problems; we prefer to keep moving forward.
Beyond fighting, a major focus of this project is how players move around and explore. The developers want to give players lots of different ways to interact with the world, and eventually become powerful enough to master it. They’re aiming for a fluid and seamless experience.
