Star Wars has subtly resolved a major inconsistency in the backstory created by George Lucas. Lucas intentionally designed the Star Wars universe to feel realistic and established, as if it had a long and rich history. He wanted audiences to believe the characters in the Skywalker saga were building upon the legacies of those who came before. As Obi-Wan Kenobi explains to Luke in A New Hope, the Jedi Knights had served as peacekeepers for over a thousand generations during the Old Republic.
Lucas created some confusion regarding the timeline of the Star Wars prequels. The films establish that the Republic had existed for a thousand years, a point Palpatine specifically highlights in Attack of the Clones when he says he won’t allow it to fall apart. This creates a bit of a contradiction, as Obi-Wan also refers to the Republic lasting for ‘a thousand generations.’ It’s as if there were two versions of the Old Republic—one lasting a millennium and another spanning countless generations—with a connection between them.
Star Wars Has Fixed the Old Republic Problem (Again)
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I always appreciated the depth the old Expanded Universe – now called ‘Legends’ – brought to the galaxy. They actually had a pretty neat explanation for how the Republic got its start. According to the lore from Knights of the Old Republic, the Republic existed a whopping 25,000 years before Luke and Leia! It nearly fell apart during a huge war between the Jedi and the Sith, but it was rebuilt about 1,000 years before the prequels. So, when Palpatine talks about the Republic, he’s referring to that version – the one we see in Episodes I-III. Obi-Wan, being a bit more vague, was likely referring to the longer, more ancient history of the Republic overall. It’s a subtle point, but it adds layers to the story!
I was really surprised by a recent development in Star Wars! The new season of Young Jedi Adventures introduced a droid named Beepers, and they mentioned he’s from the Old Republic. What’s so cool is this actually defines the Old Republic within the Star Wars universe. It confirms that it wasn’t just a legend – it was a real Republic that existed 25,000 years ago, and eventually evolved into the one we see before Anakin Skywalker’s time. It’s such a clever way to clarify things in canon, and I honestly didn’t expect it to happen in a show geared towards younger viewers!
Star Wars is Heading to the Old Republic Again

This information aligns perfectly with the official Star Wars timeline presented at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, and it adds a new layer by presenting it as something that exists within the Star Wars universe itself. Previously, the Old Republic era on that timeline hadn’t been covered by any announced projects. Now, after two years, that’s changed: Lucasfilm has officially revealed Fate of the Old Republic, a game currently in development by Arcanaut Studios. It’s still very early in production, so it will be a while before we see gameplay, but development is moving forward.
I have to say, Season 3 of Young Jedi Adventures actually solved a long-standing problem with the Star Wars timeline, and the timing couldn’t be better! That’s what’s so great about Star Wars – everything is connected. It’s amazing they fixed something that goes all the way back to George Lucas himself, especially right before they reveal a big new game. I’m really excited to see where they take the Old Republic story now that this is settled!
