Star Wars: Kathleen Kennedy’s Lucasfilm Replacements Reportedly Revealed (& There’s a Shock)

After nearly a year of rumors about her retirement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy’s potential successors are reportedly known. Kennedy previously stated she was planning for the future of the studio and an announcement was expected soon. According to a new report from Puck News, we now have details on who might take over from her.

Sources at Puck News report that Kathleen Kennedy will step down as president of Lucasfilm and be replaced by two leaders. Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer and a longtime mentee of George Lucas, and Lynwen Brennan, currently President & General Manager of Lucasfilm Business, will both serve as co-presidents. This change aligns with previous reports suggesting Lucasfilm planned to split the presidential role, bringing in a creative leader like Filoni alongside a business expert like Brennan, as Filoni has no prior executive experience. Puck anticipates these announcements within the next couple of weeks and says Kennedy’s exit interview is already scheduled.

What Filoni & Brennan’s New Roles Mean for Lucasfilm

The recent announcement felt predictable. Dave Filoni, having been mentored by George Lucas, always appeared to be the logical choice to succeed Kathleen Kennedy. He’s well-known to fans and has long been the public face of Lucasfilm at major events. His appearance at a LEGO event just yesterday, promoting a new product line, even suggested his responsibilities were growing. While Filoni was a solid creative choice, his limited business background and the increasing demands of the position made it likely he’d share leadership with a co-president.

Last year, Carrie Beck was widely expected to become co-president. So, the appointment of Lynwen Brennan is a bit unexpected, though her extensive background makes her well-qualified for the role. Lucasfilm notes that Brennan currently leads several key groups, including Marketing, Games, Publishing, Consumer Products, Publicity, Asset Management, Content Strategy, ILM, and Skywalker Sound. She also received a CBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2016 for her work in the UK’s visual effects industry.

The recent announcement about a solo movie for Rey comes at an exciting time for Star Wars fans, suggesting a fresh start for the franchise. This year, The Mandalorian & Grogu will bring a new Star Wars film to theaters for the first time since the conclusion of the sequel trilogy. This film is different because it’s designed to be a smaller, more manageable production that doesn’t need to be a massive box office hit to succeed. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, with a re-release of the original A New Hope and a new film, Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy. With Dave Filoni and Kathleen Brennan involved, the team is well-prepared to move forward with these projects.
