Reports have verified that Saber Interactive is currently developing a remake of the beloved RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. However, the project initially began with Aspyr – a studio well-known for bringing classic RPGs to different platforms. Although that initial version of the game may have been cancelled before the switch, a recent report from Mp1st features some screenshots showing the progress made by Aspyr during their development.
The screenshots show the project was in a very early stage of development. The only playable example was a basic whitebox prototype – meaning the game environments were simple, untextured white shapes, and didn’t resemble anything from the final game. The main character was wearing untextured armour as well. The user interface focused on development tools – things like graphs and curves to test animations and performance, and access to debugging information.
We’re also given a glimpse of concept art for different in-game items, such as Star Wars-inspired terminals, industrial elements, a massive computer, and a blaster. The artwork also includes some close-combat weapons – specifically vibroblades, which are usually available to players early in the game, before the main character becomes a Jedi and can wield a lightsaber.
The report shows the items seen in the screenshots were created for use in the beginning stages of the game. It also appears plans existed to build a weapon system that allowed customization – for example, players could swap out parts on a blaster to change its functionality. There were seemingly ideas for a modular system.
It’s not the first time images from Aspyr’s remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic have appeared online. We previously saw some screenshots in September, showing how the remake envisioned the planet Kashyyk – the original home of the Wookies. The game’s version of the planet would have resembled its appearance in Star Wars: Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, with thick jungles and settlements constructed high in the trees.
Aspyr originally announced the remake back in 2021. However, the project was ultimately cancelled and then moved to Saber Interactive for development. Initially, this was just speculation, but the studio later confirmed they were working on it. Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive, discussed the remake’s progress, explaining that the studio aims to ensure it “exceeds consumer expectations”.
“We are definitely making progress on this,” Karch stated. “This has been reported on by the media quite a bit. I can confirm that the game is still being developed and we are committed to delivering a product that surpasses what players expect.”
However, the development team hasn’t been eager to reveal how the game is coming along. In September 2024, Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits explained that they will only share details about the remake when they feel it’s ready to be shown. “Currently, our priority is building the game,” he stated. “We’re excited to share more information when the moment is right.”
