The upcoming Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, is breaking new ground for the franchise. It’s the first Star Wars TV show to focus on a villain as the main character, and the trailer even shows Maul referencing the Sith Code. Set a year after Revenge of the Sith, the series follows Maul as he’s on the run after surviving Order 66 and the end of the Clone Wars. Despite being a wanted man, Maul remains determined and is actively pursuing his own goals.
It looks like Maul is planning to challenge Palpatine’s power, something he tried during the Clone Wars. He’s now rebuilding his criminal organization, known as Crimson Dawn, to help him do so. The latest trailer also hints at a new ally: a red-skinned Twi’lek with Force abilities who has been part of Star Wars lore for two decades, originally appearing in older stories.
Darth Talon Made Her Debut in the Star Wars Expanded Universe

Darth Talon was a deadly Sith assassin who lived about a hundred years after the events of the Skywalker saga, during a time when the Sith were growing in power again. Unlike the traditional Sith, who followed a strict rule of only two masters, Talon was one of many Sith warriors. She was exceptionally skilled and feared, serving as one of Darth Krayt’s most trusted and ruthless enforcers – known as an “Emperor’s Hand.” Talon was a formidable fighter, using both Force powers and a fast, acrobatic lightsaber style to defeat her enemies.
Darth Talon is a striking character who quickly became a fan favorite in the Star Wars: Legacy comics, which take place later in the Star Wars timeline. In the series, she tries to turn Luke Skywalker’s grandson, Cade, to the dark side, and even acts as his teacher for a while. What sets her apart from many other Sith is her strong loyalty – she remained dedicated to her master and the Sith ideology even after the death of Darth Krayt.
George Lucas Wanted to Make Darth Talon Part of His Sequel Trilogy

Interestingly, George Lucas actually approved of the Darth Talon character. According to Paul Duncan’s book, The Star Wars Archives: 1999-2005, Lucas was impressed by how popular Darth Maul had become. He initially envisioned Maul returning in a sequel trilogy, leading a criminal organization that would emerge after the fall of the Empire. As part of this plan, Lucas wanted to introduce an apprentice for Maul – Darth Talon, a character originally from the older Star Wars Expanded Universe.
Darth Talon would likely have been a very different character if George Lucas had continued her story. He originally envisioned a continuation of the Sith’s Rule of Two, with Talon as a key villain alongside Darth Maul. Growing up during the reign of the Empire, she probably would have been just as devoted to Maul as she was to Krayt in the older Legends stories. Although Lucas’ plans for a sequel trilogy were never made, Darth Talon remains a memorable character that he believed could have been adapted for the big screen.
Maul – Shadow Lord is Clearly Riffing on Darth Talon
Okay, so the backstory for Darth Maul is getting a really interesting expansion with his new series. Traditionally, we thought he died before A New Hope, but this show jumps way back in time. It introduces a new character, Devon Izara, a young Twi’lek who feels a lot like a nod to Darth Talon. She’s on the run from the Empire and, as we quickly learn, she’s got a connection to the Force – I saw her move things with her mind! Basically, Maul is taking her under his wing and teaching her the ways of the dark side, and it’s setting her up for a life she never imagined.
It’s unclear if Devon Izara will officially be known as “Darth Talon” in the Maul – Shadow Lord comic series. However, her character design is obviously based on Darth Talon, though she’s been made slightly more subdued. It appears Lucasfilm is paying tribute to George Lucas by finally incorporating a character he admired into the official Star Wars story.
