As a lifelong fan, I remember being completely blown away when Darth Maul first switched on his double-bladed lightsaber in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Since then, it’s been amazing to see how creatively the franchise has played with those elegant weapons. We’ve gone way beyond the classic red, blue, and green – I’ve seen purple, yellow, and even orange blades in the live-action shows! And the designs? Forget just a simple hilt – we’ve got crossguards, switchblades, and even a lightwhip! Honestly, whether I’m watching them clash on screen or adding to my collection, the coolest lightsabers are a huge reason why Star Wars continues to be so captivating.
The Darksaber is arguably the most distinctive lightsaber in the Star Wars universe, mainly because of its unusual color. It first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and later made its way into live-action television with The Mandalorian. This weapon is unique as it’s the only black-bladed lightsaber in the saga, and it was created by a Jedi who was also Mandalorian. The Darksaber has a violent past, having been wielded by figures like Darth Maul and Din Djarin, before being destroyed by Moff Gideon in the Season 3 finale of The Mandalorian.
Although that change hasn’t been reversed so far, the franchise has reintroduced the Darksaber in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past. In this version, the Mandalorian Lando Calrissian (nicknamed the Landolorian) uses it in a different galaxy. It’s a really enjoyable take on the weapon, and the series is definitely worth watching. But will the Darksaber make a proper return to the main storyline?
Don’t Be Surprised If Star Wars Brings The Darksaber Back Permanently
The idea that nothing lasts forever is central to Star Wars. From the start, the series has shown that even death isn’t the end, with Jedi becoming Force Ghosts. The franchise has explored this concept repeatedly, like when Maul reappeared after seemingly being defeated in The Phantom Menace, and when Palpatine unexpectedly returned. This also applies to lightsabers: the Skywalker lightsaber was broken in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it was later repaired in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
If something gains enough popularity – and, realistically, can help sell products – then Star Wars will likely find a way to incorporate it. Therefore, the possibility of the Darksaber reappearing shouldn’t be dismissed. It wouldn’t be easy, though: the sword’s hilt was broken, and it was last located on Mandalore, before Gideon’s hidden base was eliminated. However, much like the reveal that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father, it’s certainly not impossible. The Darksaber could be discovered, and either repaired or its components used to construct a new one (particularly if the Kyber crystal within it remains undamaged).
Why bring it back? Although I don’t believe the Darksaber should reappear unless in stories or films taking place before The Mandalorian Season 3, I can see the reasoning and purpose behind its return. The Mandalorian story isn’t finished, and the Darksaber could be the key to uniting them. Given its long history – over 1,000 years – it wouldn’t be easily discarded. If Star Wars continues Bo-Katan’s story, or even explores the idea of Grogu becoming a second Mandalorian Jedi, it makes sense that they would need and obtain the Darksaber to solidify and showcase their position.
We’ve already seen with The Mandalorian how the show isn’t afraid to change course. Din Djarin initially said goodbye to Grogu, but they were quickly reunited. He began to question and even break the strict rules of his creed, the Way, before recommitting and seeking forgiveness. His ship, the Razor Crest, was destroyed, but he now has a new one in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The same happened with his blaster rifle. So, it seems likely they’ll do something similar with the Darksaber. While it might be good to move on from it, the weapon is undeniably impressive, significant to the story, and will probably, in some way, reappear.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to come out on May 22nd, 2026. You can watch all Star Wars films and series, like The Mandalorian, on Disney+.
