Star Wars is coming back to theaters this summer after a seven-year break, but this isn’t a new chapter in the Skywalker story or a standalone film like Rogue One. Instead, Lucasfilm is releasing The Mandalorian and Grogu, a continuation of the popular streaming series The Mandalorian. While the show already feels like a movie with its immersive worlds, a film allows for a bigger, more expansive experience. Luckily, director Jon Favreau, who has a lot of experience with big-screen filmmaking, has made sure The Mandalorian and Grogu will look fantastic in theaters.
At the Star Wars: Most Wanted event (as reported by Screen Rant), Jon Favreau discussed how he’s planning to improve the visual experience for the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. He explained that they need to raise the bar for the big screen, including using taller aspect ratios for IMAX and building more immersive sets. This means upgrading both the visual effects and the storytelling to a higher level.
He explained they want to create a truly immersive experience – something so captivating that people will choose to go to a movie theater, put everything else aside, and fully lose themselves in the film. It needs to be an experience you can’t pause or distract yourself from, and one that’s worth leaving the comfort of your home for.
Lucasfilm Has To Show Why The Mandalorian and Grogu Needed To Be a Movie

One of the biggest hurdles for the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is proving that it needs to be a film instead of continuing as a TV series. While Jon Favreau is right to aim for improved production design and visual effects, that alone might not be enough. The Mandalorian already has impressive visuals and pioneered groundbreaking technology like ‘The Volume’ for virtual production. The creators went to great lengths to make the show feel authentically Star Wars, so it already looked like it belonged on the big screen.
The marketing for the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie hasn’t yet explained why this story needs to be seen in theaters. The first trailer felt more like a preview for another season of The Mandalorian TV show than a new Star Wars film. While this shows how much like a movie the TV series already felt, it’s concerning for the film’s potential success in theaters. Because people strongly associate The Mandalorian with Disney+, it might be hard to convince them to see it in cinemas. Knowing it will be available on Disney+ shortly after its theatrical release makes it tempting for many to simply wait and stream it at home, similar to what happened with recent Pixar films.
With the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu getting closer, Lucasfilm needs to ramp up its marketing efforts to get people excited about seeing the movie in theaters. The recent Super Bowl trailer didn’t generate much buzz, so they need to do more to build anticipation. Jon Favreau has said they’re working to improve all aspects of the film, including the story itself. So far, Lucasfilm has been very secretive about the plot, but the next trailer should reveal more about what the movie is about and why audiences should care. They need to show what’s at stake to really get fans invested.
No one expects Lucasfilm to reveal the whole story, and surprising twists should definitely be kept secret. However, the longer they wait to share any details, the more worried people become that the story isn’t very strong or that the studio doesn’t believe it’s a major draw. It’s strange that they haven’t showcased the exciting and cinematic potential of The Mandalorian Grogu in their marketing so far. Perhaps they’re saving the best material for a final push, and that’s intentional. Hopefully that’s true, because if not, the film could face problems.
