The upcoming Disney+ series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, promises to fulfill some of George Lucas’ original ideas for the Star Wars universe. Created by Dave Filoni, the show will continue the story of Darth Maul, the popular villain from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Though it appeared Maul died fighting Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, it was later revealed he survived and continued his adventures, including appearances during Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This new series picks up the story after those events.
Dave Filoni shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the comic Maul: Shadow Lord will incorporate ideas George Lucas originally had for the character. Filoni explained that he and Lucas discussed Maul’s potential storylines over the years, and this comic is a way to realize some of those plans. He sees it as honoring the future Lucas envisioned for Maul.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited to hear Dave Filoni talk about ‘Maul – Shadow Lord.’ Apparently, it’s a way to finally explore some of George Lucas’s original ideas for the character. Filoni has said they’d discussed Maul’s potential future over the years, and this series feels like a tribute to those plans – a way to bring George’s vision to life. It’s awesome to think we’re getting a deeper look at what Lucas had in mind for Maul all those years ago!

What is Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord About?

Dave Filoni may be hinting that the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord comic will essentially fill the gap left by Star Wars: Underworld, a live-action series George Lucas originally planned back in 2005. Underworld was intended to be a dramatic show set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, long before streaming services were common.
Lucas had a vision for a show exploring the galaxy’s criminal world, but it was too expensive to produce at the time, so the project was put on hold. He later sold Star Wars to Disney. Interestingly, the storyline from Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord closely resembles Lucas’s original 2005 idea, simply featuring Darth Maul as the central character. Now, thanks to Disney+, the show can be made with a much larger budget than Lucas originally required.
Early reviews of the new Disney+ series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, describe it as realistic and intense, much like what George Lucas originally envisioned for his canceled show. Many are comparing it to Andor, suggesting this might be the Star Wars content fans have been hoping for – especially those who grew up with the franchise, as it seems to connect to Lucas’s initial plans.
The series follows Darth Maul as he questions his loyalty to Palpatine and the Empire. He discovers the Empire isn’t the Force-driven organization he expected and decides to build his own criminal empire, taking on an apprentice to help him reshape the galactic underworld.
