Star Wars’ New Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer Sets Up A Major Change for Din Djarin

The latest Star Wars adventure, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is finally in theaters, bringing the galaxy far, far away back to the big screen after a nearly seven-year break since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Directed by Jon Favreau, who also spearheaded Star Wars on Disney+, this film takes the story from the streaming series and expands it for a cinematic experience. The story follows the bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice, Grogu, as they face new dangers from Imperial leaders and a mysterious group called the Shadow Council. The cast also includes Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward and Steve Blum returning as Zeb Orrelios, bringing together storylines from across the Star Wars streaming shows.

Following the three seasons of The Mandalorian, this new film aims to connect the show’s storytelling with the scale of a big-screen blockbuster. The story picks up after the events of the Season 3 finale, and the trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu shows that things have changed in the Outer Rim since we last saw them. It seems Din Djarin is redefining his personal and professional life, especially how loyal he is to the new galactic government.

How the Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer Shifts Din Djarin’s Relationship with the New Republic

For the first three seasons of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin was a solitary figure, deeply committed to the traditional ways of the Mandalorians. As a bounty hunter working on the edges of galactic society, he mostly avoided getting involved in larger political conflicts, focusing on the survival of his community. While he initially wanted to stay neutral, his dedication to protecting Grogu repeatedly drew him into conflict with the remnants of the Empire, turning his personal quest into a fight against the old regime. By the end of Season 3, this journey seemed to come to a peaceful conclusion. Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze successfully reclaimed Mandalore, he officially adopted Grogu as his son, naming him Din Grogu, and they settled down in a simple home on the outskirts of Nevarro.

Din Djarin initially retired with an agreement through Captain Carson Teva, working only on individual jobs to stay independent from the New Republic government. However, the trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu shows this has changed. Din Djarin is now flying alongside New Republic ships in a coordinated formation, implying he’s working with them in a more official capacity than just a hired gun.

Din Djarin’s situation has changed with the addition of an official New Republic droid accompanying him in his ship. This suggests his role is now formalized within the New Republic’s military. He’s moved from being a freelancer to an active member, indicating the threat from remaining Imperial forces is serious enough that staying neutral is no longer an option. It seems Din Djarin is now fully involved in the war he previously avoided. This change fits with the larger Star Wars story, which is building towards the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn and a major conflict with the Shadow Council, making it logical for Din Djarin to become a key part of the New Republic’s defenses.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 22nd.

Should Din Djarin continue working as a bounty hunter on his own, or should he align himself with the New Republic? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
