Star Wars’ New Movies Have 3 Luke Skywalker Replacements (& It’s For the Best)

For many years, Luke Skywalker has been central to the Star Wars story, even after the first three movies concluded. He’s the saga’s most relatable hero, the character fans naturally connected with and supported. Though the Skywalker family’s story grew beyond just him—including his father, Anakin—the franchise consistently revisits Luke. From the older ‘Legends’ stories, to the sequel movies, and even the recent Disney+ shows, Luke has been brought back time and again, regardless of how many times his story seemed to finish.

I was so excited when Luke Skywalker showed up to save Grogu in *The Mandalorian* finale – I really thought they were setting up something big for his character again. But honestly, it hasn’t really panned out. He popped up as a younger version in *Obi-Wan Kenobi*, and Grogu briefly rejoined him, but that was about it. Now, it feels like *Star Wars* is finally starting to move past relying on Luke. With the movies coming back to the big screen for the first time in years, it seems like they’re building up a whole new group of characters who can step up and fill the gap he left.

How Other Star Wars Characters Are Taking On Luke Skywalker’s Role

Okay, let’s talk about who’s carrying the torch after Luke Skywalker. For me, it’s unequivocally Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. She’s not just a replacement, but a natural successor – Luke himself trained her! I think she has the potential to be a fantastic hero for a new generation of Star Wars fans. Even though the sequel trilogy wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it *did* bring a lot of people into the galaxy far, far away, and that’s important. Plus, with the Skywalker name and, hopefully, a future film of her own, she’s perfectly positioned to finally make Luke’s dream of a rebuilt Jedi Order a reality.

A new character, potentially played by Ryan Gosling, could join Rey in the next *Star Wars* film. He’s described as a charming, non-Force-sensitive pilot with a bit of a Han Solo vibe – though that’s also just typical Gosling. Interestingly, he might fill a similar role to Luke Skywalker: an ordinary person thrown into an extraordinary adventure and become a leading figure for the franchise after the sequel trilogy, with the story set five years after *The Rise of Skywalker*.

Another exciting addition to the Star Wars universe is Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, who always hides his face behind a mask. Along with Grogu, he’s become one of the most popular characters of the Disney+ era, reaching a level of fame previously seen with characters like Luke Skywalker. If *The Mandalorian and Grogu* continues to be a success, Din Djarin will solidify his place as a major new hero, likely leading to more adventures. Like Luke, he’s a character willing to fight for what’s right and protect those he cares about, even when it’s dangerous.

Star Wars Needs To Move Beyond Luke Skywalker

It’s great that Star Wars is developing new leaders, similar to Luke Skywalker, because the story can’t keep depending on the past. I’ve loved Luke since childhood, and I’d enjoy seeing more of his story if it’s compelling. However, the franchise also needs to focus on building up new characters who can carry it forward for years to come.

Luke Skywalker’s story has largely reached its conclusion. We’ve witnessed his biggest successes and failures, his joys and sorrows. While there’s potential for further stories about his new Jedi Order or conflicts with characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn, focusing on other characters offers more possibilities. Giving these characters the central role allows them to become the leads for a new generation, which is essential for the future of the Star Wars saga.

Will Luke Skywalker Ever Appear Again?

Currently, there are no plans for Luke Skywalker to appear on screen again, and it seems Mark Hamill won’t be reprising the role. Hamill recently explained that he feels he’s had his time with the character and is happy with the direction of shows like *The Mandalorian* and *The Book of Boba Fett*. He compared his experience to James Bond films – Luke had a clear beginning and end, with a focused story arc. He suggested that just as Bond doesn’t need endless sequels, Luke’s story is complete, and he’s content with that. He wishes the creators all the best with the future of the franchise.

While Luke Skywalker’s story may seem finished, a return isn’t impossible. Star Wars has used Mark Hamill, body doubles, and special effects to bring him back before. They could even fully recast the role if they wanted him to play a larger part, perhaps in the upcoming fight against Thrawn, which appears to be leading to a new movie. That decision would likely be debated by fans, considering Luke’s importance, but it might be the best way to continue his story. If not, it looks like Luke will finally get some well-deserved rest… at least for the time being.

Fans can look forward to seeing *The Mandalorian and Grogu* in movie theaters on May 22, 2026, followed by *Star Wars: Starfighter* on May 28, 2027. And for those who want to revisit older adventures, all previous *Star Wars* films are currently available to stream on Disney+.
