Okay, so Darth Revan is back in the Star Wars universe, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Revan has such a rich backstory – a Jedi hero who fought in the Mandalorian Wars, then tragically fell to the dark side and became a seriously powerful Sith Lord, only to eventually find his way back. All of that amazing stuff originally played out in the video game *Knights of the Old Republic*, a game that’s become legendary among fans. It’s a bit complicated, though, because Disney decided a while back to reset what was officially ‘canon,’ and *KotOR* and Revan’s story got moved to ‘Legends’ status. Even though it’s not technically part of the official timeline anymore, the game – and Revan especially – still has a huge following and clearly continues to inspire what’s happening with Star Wars today. It’s great to see him back, but it also makes me realize just how much potential there still is to explore with this character.
Revan is officially part of the Star Wars universe, but only by name. He was briefly mentioned in a few reference books, like *The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary* and *Shadow of the Sith*. Now, the character has returned in the LEGO Star Wars show, *Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past*. While this show isn’t considered official canon, it’s a really enjoyable series that cleverly blends LEGO play with creative takes on familiar characters-like a Darth Jar Jar or Jedi Vader-all while maintaining a lighthearted and respectful tone towards the Star Wars saga.
Darth Revan’s Comeback Is Disappointing
While *Pieces of the Past* is generally a fun experience, the way it uses the character Revan is a little disappointing. I wasn’t hoping for him to be a central figure, but he doesn’t have much to do. The other returning characters – Sith Lords, Jedi, and even a giant Chewbacca – are far more engaging. Revan mainly appears in one short fight alongside a more interesting dark side Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that’s pretty much it.
This character was a major focus of the show’s promotion, and seeing him appear on screen – in any show – felt significant because of his importance to the Star Wars universe. This created a lot of anticipation, perhaps more than the show itself deserved, considering it’s part of the *Rebuild the Galaxy* series. It feels strange to admit, as a thirty-something, that I’m critiquing a LEGO animated series, but it highlights the untapped potential of Star Wars, especially with characters like Revan and the broader *Knights of the Old Republic* storyline.
Could Revan’s Full KotOR Story Be Made Canon? Should It?
Revan’s story is one of the most compelling and layered in all of Star Wars, whether it’s considered official canon or not. It’s disappointing that such a well-developed character, and the fascinating world around him with its many possibilities, isn’t fully part of the established story. Officially recognizing Revan and other characters from *Knights of the Old Republic* would open the door for more stories and allow fans to truly experience Revan’s journey again.
The challenge with revisiting the *Knights of the Old Republic* story is its sheer scope. While a *KotOR* movie was considered at one point, it quickly became clear that a single film wouldn’t be enough. To do the story justice, it would require a trilogy, potentially a TV series, and even spinoffs to cover events like the Mandalorian Wars and introduce characters like Darth Malak and Bastila Shan. There are so many hours of established lore, and finding a clear direction while also surpassing the original would be incredibly difficult.
Wouldn’t it be easier for Lucasfilm to simply make the *Knights of the Old Republic* story part of the official *Star Wars* timeline? It doesn’t have to align perfectly – these events happened thousands of years before the Skywalker saga, so they could be treated as ancient legends within the *Star Wars* universe. That would explain any inconsistencies. While *Star Wars Rebels* used a location called Malachor, which might create a problem, there were multiple Malachors in the old *Legends* stories, so they could just be different locations.
The Star Wars timeline has largely unexplored potential, and that means fascinating characters, settings, and ideas are being overlooked. Similar to how the older Expanded Universe was handled, recent stories sometimes borrow elements – like *Andor* mentioning the Rakata – but there’s still ample room to build on a wealth of existing material.
A remake of *Knights of the Old Republic* would have been a fantastic way to re-establish the game’s story as official canon, and it still has the potential to do so. The remake has been in development for a while, and it’s currently unclear if or when it will be released. However, if it does come out, it would be an ideal opportunity to bring *KotOR* back into the official storyline and create new stories and characters – like Revan – across various platforms like games, movies, and books.
