After 16 years, a famous Star Wars bounty hunter will finally appear in live-action in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, is a huge Star Wars fan himself, and he’s clearly enjoyed the chance to expand on George Lucas’s universe. He recently described writing for Star Wars as being like playing with his favorite childhood toys, speaking at New York Toy Fair.
It’s easy to see why Jon Favreau’s Star Wars stories feel like a tribute to the entire saga. The new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu is packed with references, including battle droids from the Clone Wars now working as mercenaries, and even creatures previously glimpsed only in Chewbacca’s holographic game. But the biggest surprise is the return of a bounty hunter first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars sixteen years ago.
Embo Has Made His Way Into Live-Action Star Wars At Last
The trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu shows Din Djarin and Grogu on a dangerous mission to stop a war between the New Republic and what’s left of the Empire. While the full story is still unclear, we now know Din is working to defeat Imperial leaders, criminals, and powerful gangsters – which likely explains his encounter with the Hutts. However, Din’s enemies aren’t staying put, and the trailer shows a dangerous villain named Embo attacking Din’s home on Nevarro.
Embo, a character originally created for Season 2 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is a member of the Kyuzo alien race. He was a skilled bounty hunter who generally preferred working alone and was known for keeping an anooba as a pet. Interestingly, the creators initially planned to eliminate Embo after his first appearance, but they liked the character so much they rewrote the story to let him live. Now, after 16 years, Embo is finally appearing in live-action, joining other bounty hunters who have made the jump from animation to live-action in recent years.
Embo previously worked for the Hutts, and it seems he’s joined them again. This is unexpected, though, as everyone thought he’d retired from bounty hunting to become a farmer. Whatever the Hutts offered must have been very tempting, and it’s likely Din Djarin and Grogu will face trouble because of his return.
Embo Will Make A Terrifying Villain For The Mandalorian and Grogu

Embo joins a growing number of bounty hunters appearing in live-action shows, and it’s logical the Hutts would hire someone well-known. Din Djarin is considered one of the best bounty hunters in the galaxy – a rare “class one” operative – and with Boba Fett retired and running a criminal empire, Fennec Shand by his side, and Cad Bane defeated by Boba on Tatooine, skilled hunters like Din are increasingly hard to find.
Embo is a remarkably talented bounty hunter. Operating during the Old Republic, he fearlessly pursued even Jedi and senators, a bold move considering the Jedi Order numbered over 10,000 strong. During the Clone Wars, he almost succeeded in killing Padmé Amidala, even while she was guarded by Anakin Skywalker – forcing the powerful Jedi Knight to retreat. Given the long-standing conflict between Jedi and Mandalorians, Embo’s ability to challenge a Jedi proves he’s capable of fighting anyone.
Embo’s anooba isn’t a typical pet—it’s a fierce, meat-eating beast with sharp tusks and a pack mentality. He trained one, named Marrok, to track prey using its incredible sense of smell. Although Marrok is deceased by the time of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Embo appears to have another anooba now, as seen in the trailer. These creatures are incredibly dangerous; a single strike from an anooba’s tusk could potentially kill Grogu.
It’s still unclear how important a character Embo will be in The Mandalorian and Grogu. He’s been sent to hunt Din Djarin and Grogu, but we don’t know if he’ll actually capture them, or if he’ll suffer consequences for challenging another skilled bounty hunter. We might find out more from future trailers and announcements, but most likely we’ll have to wait until the show airs in May to see what happens.
