As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I’ve witnessed the Death Star’s grand demise numerous times across different platforms and formats. However, even with such familiarity, it was still refreshing to witness Shinya Ohira’s unique take on this iconic event.
Ohira, renowned in anime circles, brought his creative vision to life in “BLACK,” an episode from Star Wars: Visions Season 3, which received a special preview at the Anime NYC convention over the weekend. This captivating short film offers a chilling perspective on the Death Star’s destruction, told through the eyes of a Storm Trooper.
During a pre-recorded Q&A session screened at the convention, Ohira shared his reasons for adopting an experimental, psychedelic style for this powerful piece of cinematic storytelling. It’s safe to say that the result is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Ohira explained that while making the film, our goal was to create a visual backdrop of intense battles accompanied by Sakura Fujiawara’s remarkable singing voice. The creative direction of the story was something we left open for interpretation, allowing viewers to form their own interpretations as they watched.

The anime master elaborated, “We delved deep into intricate aspects for this film. The Death Star and its surroundings are exceptionally detailed, and creating the action scenes with the stormtroopers was quite challenging for our animators. It was demanding, but it paid off – the outcome truly stands on its own merit… It’s almost like nothing ever seen before.
In this sprawling space battle depicted by “BLACK”, I found myself deeply engrossed as it delved into one Stormtrooper’s story. Far from avoiding the grand themes that define Star Wars, it brilliantly explores the eternal struggle between light and dark that underpins the entire saga. This internal conflict, as portrayed in this piece, resonates not just across galaxies but also within the heart of every imperial soldier, serving as a stark reminder that such strife exists everywhere, even within us.
The animated series titled “Star Wars: Visions” sees studios worldwide contributing their distinctive styles to individual, standalone episodes within the Star Wars universe. Much like Season 1, it’s anticipated that Season 3 will showcase entirely Japanese-made animations. Ohira, a renowned figure in animation for his work on films such as Akira and Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, is among the veteran animators working on this upcoming season.
The third season of ‘Star Wars: Visions’ will debut on October 29th on Disney+. If you haven’t caught up yet, you can stream the previous seasons and the entire Star Wars collection that’s already available on the platform.
