For over thirty years, George Lucas directly guided the creative direction of Star Wars, establishing a unique storytelling style that defined the space opera genre. When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, the franchise entered a new phase, aiming to honor Lucas’s original stories while also exploring fresh ideas. This period included both projects that continued established storylines, like the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and more experimental works, such as the highly praised Star Wars: Andor and the often-debated sequel trilogy. Now, with the release of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, Star Wars is entering a new chapter, preparing to share the very last story ideas originally envisioned by George Lucas himself.
I’m so hyped for Maul – Shadow Lord coming to Disney+ in April! It’s a 10-episode animated series that’s going to connect the end of the Republic with the beginning of the Empire’s criminal world. The story takes place on this really cool, visually striking planet called Janix, and it follows Maul – Sam Witwer is amazing as always – as he tries to find his place in a galaxy that’s moved past the whole Jedi vs. Sith thing. Apparently, the creators are going for a noir vibe, and it’s actually based on ideas George Lucas had decades ago! It’s wild to think this show is finally bringing one of his original visions to life, even after Disney took over. I can’t wait to see it!
George Lucas Imagine Darth Maul’s Next Story Decades Ago

For a long time, most of us Star Wars fans felt like The Bad Batch was the very last piece of George Lucas’s vision. And it wasn’t just us – the people actually making the show felt the same way. They really saw the story of these special clones as the final project that George himself had a direct hand in, marking the end of an era at Lucasfilm.
As someone who’s followed the evolution of Star Wars animation, I found Dee Bradley Baker’s recent comments about The Bad Batch particularly insightful. He revealed that there was a real sense of closure during production, and it all ties back to George Lucas’ original vision. Apparently, Lucas conceived of The Bad Batch as a kind of final chapter to his Star Wars legacy, something he initially discussed with Dave Filoni during The Clone Wars. Baker explained that the writers created such distinct personalities for each member of the Bad Batch that, surprisingly, it was easier for him to differentiate them vocally than it had been with the larger clone army. He really felt like he was portraying unique individuals, which made the whole process surprisingly smooth.
The release of The Star Wars Archives: 1999–2005 offered new insight into George Lucas’s plans for the sequel trilogy. The book revealed Lucas originally envisioned Darth Maul as a major player – a powerful crime boss – in the new films. Rather than Emperor Palpatine’s return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucas intended for the criminal underworld to be the main threat to the New Republic, with Maul bringing together different criminal organizations to take the place of the fallen Empire.

Though the later Star Wars movies took a different path, the groundwork for Darth Maul’s criminal empire was laid in the final seasons of The Clone Wars. This happened through the creation of the Shadow Collective, where Maul used his Sith skills to force groups like the Pyke Syndicate, Black Sun, and Mandalorian Death Watch to work together. Taking control of Mandalore was a key step in building a secure home base for his expanding power.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I really appreciate how ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ takes this idea of Maul building a criminal empire and makes it work. It cleverly uses the ‘godfather’ trope to ground the story, but more importantly, it feels like it’s finally delivering on George Lucas’ original vision for where Maul’s story could go. It doesn’t just add to the character; it feels like it’s completing something Lucas had in mind all along, giving us a definitive and canon ending to his ideas about Maul.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m thrilled to share that a new series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, is coming to Disney+ on April 6, 2026! They’re releasing two episodes every week, which is perfect for binge-watching. I can’t wait!
