I’m so excited for the new Star Wars show! It’s going to be amazing to see more of Darth Maul, especially considering how much of an impact he’s had with so little screen time. It’s crazy to think he was only in The Phantom Menace for a little over six minutes, but he quickly became a fan favorite! I’m glad George Lucas recognized what a great character he was and brought him back for The Clone Wars. This new show feels like a chance to really explore his story and build on one of the best moments in Star Wars history.
Darth Maul’s story truly concluded in Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels, specifically in the memorable episode “Twin Suns.” In this episode, Maul found Obi-Wan Kenobi, now older, on Tatooine, leading to one last fight between them. While Maul was still fueled by a long-held grudge and a need for revenge, Obi-Wan had moved on and was solely focused on keeping Luke safe. The duel was quick and decisive, with Maul stuck in his old ways and Obi-Wan using a more modern lightsaber style. Maul ultimately died in Obi-Wan’s arms, which felt like a proper ending, and it’s about to become even more meaningful.
Darth Maul’s Last Words Were of the Chosen One
Obi-Wan Kenobi actually avoided fighting Darth Maul whenever possible. He initially let Maul roam Tatooine undisturbed, only getting involved when Maul began manipulating the Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger. Even when they finally confronted each other, Obi-Wan didn’t draw his lightsaber until Maul realized Obi-Wan was protecting someone. At that point, Obi-Wan knew Maul was too dangerous to remain alive. He quickly disarmed Maul and delivered a fatal strike.
While Maul struggled with bitterness, Obi-Wan found peace in the years following the events of Revenge of the Sith. Despite everything Maul had done to him, Obi-Wan held him as he died and surprisingly offered comfort, explaining he was protecting Luke Skywalker. Obi-Wan believed Luke was the one destined to bring balance to the Force, but Maul remained fixated on revenge. With his final breath, Maul declared that the Chosen One would avenge them both by defeating Darth Sidious and ending his reign over the Jedi and Sith.
Even in his final moments, Maul revealed he hadn’t found peace. He was still driven by anger and a thirst for revenge. Fans who had followed his story for a long time understood what he meant. They knew Palpatine had abandoned Maul years earlier, after his defeat on Naboo, and chosen a new apprentice – Count Dooku. Maul had tried to challenge Palpatine, but his attempt ended in disaster. Now, we’re finally going to learn the full story behind Maul’s pain and motivations.
Maul: Shadow Lord Will Add So Much Depth to Darth Maul’s Death

The upcoming Star Wars series, Maul: Shadow Lord, focuses on the story of Maul. Set during the dark years of the Empire, the show follows Maul as he tries to regain control in the criminal world and challenge Palpatine’s power. He’ll also take on an apprentice, likely Darth Talon, a character inspired by a classic Star Wars villain. This is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Star Wars shows on Disney+, as it’s the first to feature a villain as the main character instead of a hero.
As a fan, it’s pretty clear going in that Maul isn’t going to win. Darth Talon isn’t even around during the Rebels era, and the Maul we see is a far cry from his former self. He’s lost his whole criminal organization, having handed it off to someone else in Crimson Dawn a while back – we don’t even know how or why! It just confirms that his fight against Palpatine and Vader was always going to end in defeat, and we’re about to find out exactly what went wrong.
Darth Maul’s promise that the Chosen One would avenge him is a powerful statement, and we’ve already begun to understand its significance. The comic series Maul: Shadow Lord will reveal even more about what Maul lost in his battle against the true Sith, adding layers of meaning to his famous final scene and making it even more impactful. It will deepen our understanding of his defeat and the weight of his words.
