The Star Wars saga has always played with the order in which its story is told. It started with George Lucas releasing the first film as “Episode IV” and later filling in the backstory with the prequel films beginning in 1999. The timeline of The Clone Wars became so complicated that Lucasfilm even had to create an official timeline to help fans follow it. Now, Lucasfilm is promising the most anticipated prequel yet, adding to the story of their popular Star Wars TV series.
Last year, Lucasfilm started a new series of books called “Reign of the Empire” taking place during the time when the Empire controlled the galaxy. Gizmodo recently showed off the cover for the second book, titled Edge of the Abyss, written by Rebecca Roanhorse. The story happens a year before the events of the Andor series and will include some familiar faces.

The returning characters include (but are not limited to)
- Anto Kreegyr
- Luthen Rael
- Kleya Marki
- Nisus Osar (one of the members of the Ministry of Enlightenment we see making plans for anti-Ghorman propaganda in Andor season 2)
- Perrin Fertha
- Leida Mothma
- Mon Mothma
- Bail Organa
- Saw Gerrera
Rebecca Roanhorse, who previously wrote the novel Resistance Reborn leading up to The Rise of Skywalker, is working on a story that will connect to Season 2 of Andor. It will explore the events leading up to the Ghorman Massacre – even taking place on the planet Ghorman – and include a moment fans have been hoping for. Someone involved with the project hinted at this exciting development online, simply stating: “Leia, meet Leida.” This refers to an upcoming encounter between Leia and Mon Mothma’s daughter, a meeting many viewers have anticipated.
This is the Andor Prequel We’ve Been Waiting For

From the beginning, Star Wars has expanded its stories across many different formats, and the novels published by Lucasfilm are a great way to get to know its characters better. Alexander Freed’s The Mask of Fear, the first book in the “Reign of the Empire” series, was especially well-received. Now, Rebecca Roanhorse, a talented author, is offering a new and interesting look inside the heads of the characters from Andor, which is particularly exciting when it comes to Luthen Rael and Kleya Marki. We might even learn how the rebel network known as the Axis came together.
The brief look at Leia on the cover is definitely the most anticipated part of this news. We’ve already enjoyed seeing a young Princess Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi (played brilliantly by Vivien Lyra Blair), and it will be interesting to learn how her adoptive father, Bail Organa, tried to protect her from public attention. It’s particularly poignant to imagine Leia meeting Leida Mothma, considering Leia eventually developed a closer, daughter-like relationship with Mon Mothma after Alderaan was destroyed.
The new Star Wars comic, Reign of the Empire – Edge of the Abyss, comes out on September 15, 2026, and you can order it on Amazon today.
