Star Wars Officially Confirms The Acolyte’s Kylo Ren Setup

Even though The Acolyte might not continue, the show has officially confirmed a major fan theory about its connection to the Star Wars universe. Set long before the events of the prequel movies, The Acolyte showed us the decline of the Jedi and the Republic, a time when the Sith were secretly gaining strength. The series also introduced a mysterious character, the Stranger, who seemed to be a new Sith Lord, and fans were unsure where they fit into the established history of the Sith’s ‘Rule of Two’.

Despite its cancellation, The Acolyte still has a dedicated following. A recently released art book, The Art of The Acolyte, offers new insights into the show, particularly the enigmatic Sith Lord portrayed by Manny Jacinto. The crew playfully nicknamed the character “Frank” due to the unsettling smile on his mask, which was a complex creation involving multiple teams – creature design, costumes, stunts, and visual effects. Interestingly, the mask wasn’t just for appearances; it was intentionally designed to hint at the Stranger’s true identity.

The Stranger’s Mask Was Designed As a Kylo Ren Clue

As detailed in The Art of The Acolyte, the mask worn by the Stranger was intentionally created to resemble Kylo Ren’s helmet from the later Star Wars films. Creature artist Nick Tyrell created the final design, which is described as a simple, flat-faced mask with a breathing apparatus shaped like a sneer and small eye slits. The subtle frill on the back of the helmet – a feature originally inspired by samurai armor and first appearing in Darth Vader’s design – suggests a connection between the Stranger and Kylo Ren, a link the storytellers specifically wanted to create through the mask’s appearance.

Leslye Headland revealed that the initial design of a character hinted at a link to the Knights of Ren. This led them to explore that connection, especially knowing they planned to introduce Darth Plagueis, who would become Palpatine’s master. To maintain the Sith’s ‘Rule of Two’ – the tradition of only having a master and one apprentice – they theorized that this character, known as the Stranger, could be the very first Knight of Ren, originating from a culture related to the Sith that ultimately continued to exist.

Fans spotted a familiar musical hint in The Acolyte: a cue intentionally reminiscent of Kylo Ren’s theme from the later Star Wars films. According to the book The Art of The Acolyte, this was a conscious choice to suggest a connection between characters. As showrunner Leslye Headland explains, the intention was to create a mystery. “We don’t reveal his full name,” she says, “leaving it open whether ‘Ren’ is his family name or if he’s the original Ren. It’s a subtle reference that doesn’t give away too much.”

Will Star Wars Canon Commit to this Kylo Ren Connection?

It makes sense that Kylo Ren is connected to the Knights of Ren. Star Wars has slowly been revealing more about them – they were similar to the Sith, but the Sith considered them weaker. The Knights of Ren existed long before the prequel trilogy, but they mostly stayed hidden in the Outer Rim, away from the Republic. Their relationship with the Empire was complicated; at one point, they even assisted Crimson Dawn in attacking the Sith.

In The Acolyte, the character known as the Stranger never explicitly identified as a Sith Lord. He simply stated the Jedi would perceive him as one. Considering the Force was becoming unstable near the end of the High Republic, with numerous dark side groups appearing, it’s possible the Stranger found a Sith artifact and started his own cult. The brief appearance of Darth Plagueis in the series might have been him investigating a potential threat to his legacy. Another possibility is that the Stranger was a Sith apprentice thought to be deceased, who has now resurfaced.

The goal of The Acolyte series was to explore certain aspects of the Star Wars universe. However, because the show was canceled before it could fully explain these ideas, it’s debatable whether its story should be considered official canon. We might learn more about the Sith secrets hinted at in The Acolyte through future Star Wars books or comics.
