Eight years after the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, new details have emerged about Luke Skywalker’s final moments with Kylo Ren. Kylo was stunned when Luke appeared unharmed amidst the First Order’s attack on the Resistance base on Crait. What followed was a powerful duel, but Kylo soon discovered Luke wasn’t physically present – he was projecting himself using the Force. This immense effort ultimately led to Luke becoming one with the Force on the island of Ahch-To.
In The Last Jedi, Luke’s final words to Kylo Ren were surprisingly optimistic. He declared, “The Rebellion is reborn today,” and hinted that the war was far from over. He then famously said that even if Kylo defeated him, he would remain with him, much like Darth Vader’s connection to Luke. Luke ended with a lighthearted “See you around, kid,” which seemed like a hopeful prediction. Now, Star Wars has confirmed that prediction came true.
Luke And Kylo Ren Met Again After The Last Jedi

As a big Star Wars fan, I’ve been really enjoying the Star Wars: Legacy of Vader comic series, especially issue #10. It takes place right after The Last Jedi but before The Rise of Skywalker, and it dives into what was going on with Kylo Ren. Basically, he’s getting annoyed by Luke constantly being in his head, so he goes looking for him. What’s really cool is how he does it – Kylo manages to tap into this crazy realm called the Netherworld of the Force, which is like where spirits and Force Ghosts hang out, and where dark side energy isn’t supposed to be able to go. He actually finds Luke there and they have a confrontation. It’s a fascinating look at their connection during that time.
Luke Skywalker is at his most charming and insightful here, cleverly challenging Kylo Ren. Luke believes Kylo isn’t truly lost to the dark side and is still capable of being saved. Finally, Kylo lashes out, declaring, “I hate you.” He demands Luke stop interfering, asserting he’s no longer a student and that Luke failed to turn him into a carbon copy. He angrily tells Luke to leave him alone, threatening to destroy him if he doesn’t.
Kylo clearly intended his words to deeply hurt Luke, but Luke responds calmly, pointing out that destroying Kylo would also mean destroying the Force – and ultimately, destroying Kylo himself. A slight smile plays on Luke’s face as he adds that having objectives is still worthwhile.
Luke’s final words are a powerful blow to Kylo Ren, impacting him more deeply than any argument could. He tells Kylo, “The fact that you came here is what matters. You need to consider how you did it. I have no feelings for Kylo Ren, but I will always be here for Ben.”
Luke Skywalker’s Final Words Foreshadow Kylo Ren’s Redemption

This story shares a similar theme with Ben Solo’s journey in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Like Rey did with Kylo Ren and Ben, the characters here recognize a distinction between a person’s outward persona and their true self. They understand that Kylo Ren is just a corrupted side of Ben Solo, a result of being consumed by the dark side, and it’s Ben they want to reach. Both Luke and Rey saw that Kylo Ren wasn’t the complete person, but a distorted version of the Ben they knew.
This explains how Kylo Ren could tap into a hidden, darker side of the Force. Despite being a place of banished darkness, the goodness within him – the part that was Ben – still yearned for it. It’s important to note that neither Luke nor Rey sees Kylo Ren as truly significant. They view him as just a facade, something to be overcome. What they truly care about is Ben, the person beneath the mask, and they’re determined to reach him.
Rae Carson’s novel adaptation of The Rise of Skywalker shows that Luke and other Force Ghosts guided Leia, and it’s interesting to consider they might have told her about Luke’s final conversation with Kylo Ren. If they had, Leia would have known her son still had a chance at redemption, which would have made the ending of the Star Wars sequel trilogy even more meaningful.
I just finished reading an amazing conversation in Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #10! It’s by Charles Soule and Luke Ross, and you can pick it up now from Marvel Comics – I highly recommend it!
