A recently published book details a previously cut storyline for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that would have resulted in the destruction of Coruscant. The film’s ending already showed a desperate move by the First Order, revealing their massive Final Order fleet in a last-ditch effort to conquer the galaxy under the command of the evil Emperor.
Although the final plan was already devastating and would have caused the deaths of millions throughout the galaxy, recently uncovered concept art reveals it could have been even more catastrophic. At one point, the plan involved Star Destroyers deliberately crashing into the planet Coruscant.
Star Wars artist Doug Chiang recently shared a concept piece from his new books, Doug Chiang: The Cinematic Legacy Volume I & The Star Wars Legacy Volume II (as reported by David Wadey on X). The artwork shows a fleet of Star Destroyers plummeting towards a planet’s surface, seemingly intent on causing widespread destruction.

The image caption explained that because Coruscant is known as a heavily defended planet, the creators asked themselves how the First Order could realistically attack it. Their solution? Using Star Destroyers as kamikaze weapons.
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I always pictured Coruscant as basically unassailable – a planet covered in defenses. So, when I heard about the First Order attacking it, I was really curious how they’d even try. One idea that floated around was pretty wild: apparently, they considered just ramming Star Destroyers into the city, sacrificing them to wipe out whole sections. It was a crazy thought!
There’s been discussion that this scene might have been part of the first draft of Episode IX, originally called Star Wars: Duel of the Fates, written by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. That early version of the story apparently ended with a major battle on the planet Coruscant, and this Star Destroyer sequence would have been a key part of it.
For years, fans have wondered about scenes that didn’t make it into the final Star Wars sequel, including a dramatic plot point and an impressive moment where Rey destroys a TIE Fighter with a single blow. Currently, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn’t available on Disney+. Interestingly, the movie’s climactic battle wasn’t originally planned for Coruscant, but instead took place on the Sith planet Exegol.
Why Did Lucasfilm Cut the Grim Episode IX Star Destroyer Moment?

This new scene from Star Wars: Episode IX is likely to surprise and interest dedicated fans. The striking image of huge Star Destroyers speeding toward the city planet Coruscant is one that viewers won’t soon forget.
Why did Lucasfilm remove that intense scene? It probably happened because the studio scrapped the original plan for Episode IX, and this scene was part of that earlier version.
During production, Lucasfilm changed course from the original story outlined in the Duel of Fates script and instead moved forward with The Rise of Skywalker. As a result, the planned large-scale final battle on Coruscant was scrapped and replaced with the battle on Exegol that audiences eventually saw.
Putting kamikaze Star Destroyers on Exegol didn’t make sense. Since the Resistance was already attacking the First Order’s main base, the First Order wouldn’t need to bring the fight to them. Plus, using a Star Destroyer as a bomb wouldn’t be worth it if the only target was Palpatine and his supporters.
It was more logical to continue the space battle using the Star Destroyers, allowing Palpatine to face Rey and Ben Solo by himself on the planet below.
