The Knights of Ren’s Past Reveals a Surprising History With Kylo Ren


The Saga of Vader’s Disciples #8 delves into the origins of the Knights of Ren, revealing that they were not a structured military unit but a band of marauders led by a single commander. The Knights of Ren adhere to the allure of darkness and power it bestows, as well as the freedom it embodies – the ethos known as ‘Ren’.

In the story, Tava Ren, their current leader, leads an expedition to unlock a vault on Vandor, a Mid-Rim planet. However, when trouble arises, her Knights desert her, forcing her to face adversity alone. Enraged by their cowardice, Tava challenges their disloyalty. In response, one of the Knights attributes their abandonment to Tava’s poor judgment, insisting that she misjudged the mission as being simple. Piling on the criticism, another Knight asserts her ambition will lead them all to disaster.

Tava was puzzled as to why her crew acted fearfully instead of boldly, given they were supposed to be fierce raiders. She probed them for an explanation, and they hesitantly shared their past experiences under Kylo Ren’s command.

In the beginning, Kylo Ren, then known as Ben Solo, joined the Knights of Ren. He was a talented young man with exceptional power, but things took a dark turn when he brutally killed the leader of the Knights and assumed control, leading them on an unwanted path.

Kylo’s behavior changed drastically over time, becoming increasingly reclusive and unpredictable. His crew often witnessed him talking to himself or behaving irrationally. Eventually, Kylo revealed his grand scheme and brought the Knights to Snoke, who would later found the First Order. However, when the Knights refused to follow Kylo, Snoke, and the First Order, they were met with a hail of gunfire, forcing them to flee for safety.

Tava Ren is Not Easily Intimidated


After discovering the truth about her predecessor, Tava devises a strategy that remains hidden from us, the readers, which involves swearing loyalty to Kylo. Although this allegiance seems less than sincere given future clashes between them suggested by the comic, Tava’s courage and resolve to face Kylo head-on distinguishes her from his rule as leader. Tava Ren stands out as a strong and merciless leader compared to the cowardly Knights who abandoned her along with their unstable former commander.

In the sneak peek for issue #9 of “Legacy of Vader”, it’s indicated that Tava Ren plans to challenge Kylo Ren, raising the intriguing question as to whether Kylo Ren can hold his ground against his cunning and sharp-witted adversary. This sets up a significant confrontation that may expose the full extent of both characters’ abilities and ultimately decide the destiny of the Knights of Ren.

Kylo Ren, despite claiming the title of Supreme Leader following Snoke’s death, continues to grapple with defining himself independent from his family’s influential past. His rule remains marked by instability, reflecting the lingering influence of his family’s formidable legacy. Issue #8 of Legacy of Vader introduces a captivating tension between this powerful new leader and an older figure who is still wrestling with self-discovery and identity.
