Star Wars Revelation Confirms A Last Minute Change Stopped Yoda & Grogu Looking Completely Different

It’s always fun to learn new things about Star Wars. But recently, discoveries about the franchise’s history have made fans wonder what it would have been like if Yoda and Grogu hadn’t looked the way they do. According to newly reviewed materials from the Star Wars archives and conversations with a makeup artist who worked on the original Yoda puppets, their iconic green, wrinkly appearance was a relatively late decision during the creative process.

The original script for *The Empire Strikes Back* described Yoda as a small, bluish creature dressed in rags when Luke and R2-D2 first landed on Dagobah. However, the final version of the film presented Yoda differently, which is probably a good thing – a blue Yoda just doesn’t feel right!

So How Did We Avoid Blue Yoda?

Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan wrote the script for *The Empire Strikes Back*, and early sketches even showed Yoda as pink! It’s common for the final movie to differ from initial ideas due to things like time constraints, budget issues, or technical challenges. But what led to the decision to change Yoda’s color?

The truth is, no one really knows why Yoda wasn’t always green. Lucasfilm hasn’t offered an explanation, and sadly, many of the original filmmakers have passed away, making it hard to find answers. It’s strange considering how much early artwork exists showing Yoda as blue, purple, or even without color—like sketches from the late 1970s. In fact, two pieces of artwork from 1980, the year *The Empire Strikes Back* came out, depict a purple or blue Yoda. It wasn’t until several months after the film’s release that green Yoda appeared in published materials. Nick Maley, a special effects designer on *The Empire Strikes Back*, recalls a drawing of Yoda being green even before they started building the puppet. He remembers the team spent five months deciding what Yoda would look like, then were given just seven weeks to actually create the animatronic character.
