Star Wars Revives the Biggest Grogu Theory Ahead of New Movie (& It Confirms 1 Harsh Reality)

The new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu looks like an exciting journey for Din Djarin and Grogu. It will likely show Grogu growing and becoming more powerful with the Force, learning new skills like swimming, and possibly even speaking his first words. The season will also strengthen the connection between them, as hinted at in the trailer which features Pedro Pascal’s character without his helmet.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been thinking about where they could take Grogu’s story. They might revisit the idea of him becoming a Mandalorian Jedi, something The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett hinted at but then pulled back from. It’s a big deal because there’s only been one Mandalorian Jedi ever – Tarre Vizsla, who also created the Darksaber, and that was a thousand years ago! Season 2 of The Mandalorian really set that up with Luke taking Grogu to train, but Boba Fett seemed to undo it when Grogu chose the Mandalorian armor over the lightsaber. Still, I get the feeling that storyline isn’t completely finished just yet.

Grogu Could Still Become A Mandalorian Jedi

Every Star Wars film so far has featured at least one Jedi or Sith – though technically, Darth Maul wasn’t using that title in Solo. Could The Mandalorian and Grogu be the first movie to break that pattern? It’s a real possibility, and might even be a good direction for the story. However, the trailer hints that Jedi and Sith may still play a role.

We see Grogu appearing to meditate using the Force, on a planet that looks a lot like Dagobah – Yoda’s home from the original Star Wars films. Dagobah was a special place with incredibly strong Force energy, and this new planet might be similar. If Grogu is trying to get better at using the Force, it suggests he’s continuing to combine Jedi and Mandalorian traditions.

It’s clear Grogu takes after his father, Din, even sporting what appears to be beskar armor in the trailer – and he’s undeniably cute while wearing it! However, Din won’t be able to protect Grogu forever. Considering Grogu’s species can live for centuries – Yoda lived to be 900 years old – Grogu will eventually need to learn to defend himself. Training as a Jedi, alongside the Mandalorian ways, would be the ideal preparation.

Because the character is young, there’s no need to rush this particular story arc, which actually makes it more achievable. It’s unrealistic to expect him to have his whole life planned out already, so exploring the path of a Jedi later on would feel natural. From a broader perspective for the franchise, this would also be a good move, as it creates more opportunities for future stories with Grogu. At Star Wars Celebration Japan last year, Dave Filoni addressed Grogu and Sabine’s Jedi paths – and whether Grogu could revisit his – as reported by Screen Rant’s Molly Brizzell, saying:

Basically, yes, it’s definitely possible. While they’re both quite different and heading down separate paths, there’s no reason it couldn’t happen. They seem to be moving in slightly different ways, though.

This isn’t a definite confirmation, but it suggests Grogu could still become a Jedi. While it’s best for Grogu to spend as much time as possible with Din Djarin, the story might eventually separate them, especially if they show Grogu growing up. If he continues using the Force while still wearing Mandalorian armor, he’ll essentially be a Mandalorian Jedi, and the show could even officially give him that title, either in The Mandalorian and Grogu or in future installments.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in theaters on May 22nd, 2026.
