With Star Wars: Visions, the iconic saga of the Jedi and Sith expanded into the world of anime. The Disney+ series, created in collaboration with several Japanese and North American animation studios over its first three seasons, proved to be a hit. However, the show is now facing accusations of plagiarism. Stunt performer Lorenz Hideyoshi, whose credits include John Wick, The Matrix, and Dune, claims the series borrowed from her previous work and has shared a comparison highlighting the similarities.
Hideyoshi, a choreographer, claims that the Star Wars: Visions episode, āThe Bandits of Golak,ā directly used choreography from her 2019 fan film, Dark Jedi. She points out that despite changes to the weapons, the action sequences are strikingly similar, even using the same camera angles. Lorenz questioned Disney’s actions, suggesting that because her film was a non-profit fan tribute, they felt entitled to use her work. She also implied that Disney should either better compensate their animators or hire dedicated action designers. A comparison of the two action sequences is available for viewers to assess the similarities and determine if her fan film served as the basis for the Visions short.
Visionsā Plagiarism Controversy
Although Disney oversaw the creation of Star Wars: Visions, this specific episode was created by 88 Pictures. Before working on Star Wars, 88 Pictures had experience with large animated projects like Netflixās Trollhunters, The Bad Guys: Breaking In, Megamind Vs.The Doom Syndicate, Spirit Untamed, Fast & Furious Spy Racers, among others. As of now, neither 88 Pictures nor Disney has commented on the claims that the episode plagiarized content. āThe Bandits of Golakā is currently still available on Disney+, but itās unlikely to stay there if the plagiarism accusations are proven true.
After the release of its third season, it’s still unclear whether Star Wars: Visions will be renewed for a fourth. With plans for a new live-action Star Wars movie in 2026āagain following the adventures of the Mandalorian and Groguāthe world of Jedi and Sith remains central to the franchise. The third season of the anime series not only brought back Japanese animation studios, but also revisited stories from the first two seasons. While characters from Star Wars animated shows have crossed over into live-action, as seen with characters from Star Wars Rebels appearing in the Ahsoka series, that hasnāt happened yet for Visions.
