As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m hearing some exciting things about where Lucasfilm is taking the franchise on Disney+. It all started with those epic space operas in the ’70s, of course, but Disney+ has really opened things up. They’re not afraid to experiment with different genres, which I love! We’ve already seen it with shows like Andor, a really gritty political thriller, and Skeleton Crew, which feels like a fun, adventurous coming-of-age story. It’s cool to see the Star Wars universe being used in so many creative ways for streaming.
According to Star Wars news reporter Daniel Richtman, Lucasfilm is developing a horror series for Disney+. Details are scarce, and it’s currently unknown how far along the project is or who is working on it, but it would represent a new direction for the Star Wars franchise.
Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, revealed in an April 2025 interview with Business Insider that a horror-themed Star Wars project was being developed. Recent reporting from Richtman now confirms this will be a series released on Disney+.
Currently, it doesn’t seem like Dan Gilroy is working on this project. He’s busy with his new film, Behemoth!, which stars Pedro Pascal, after choosing not to sign an exclusive contract with Disney.
This Star Wars Book Reveals the Perfect Horror Story for Disney+

While Lucasfilm hasn’t created a truly scary Star Wars story for film or television, they do exist in other forms of media. The most well-known example is the novel Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber, which isn’t considered official Star Wars canon. It tells the story of an Imperial crew discovering a zombie-like virus on an abandoned Star Destroyer.
It’s possible this new Disney+ series is based on a zombie-like virus in the Star Wars universe, letting Lucasfilm follow the popularity of Marvel Zombies with a science fiction take on the concept.
A horror series featuring Darth Vader could be genuinely frightening, maybe by portraying him as a relentless killer stalking a Rebel base. However, it’s hard to believe Lucasfilm would be willing to take such a bold risk with such an iconic character.
Another key question is whether Lucasfilm would be willing to push boundaries with its horror series by giving it an R-rating (like TV-MA). That would be a surprising move, as they haven’t gone beyond the TV-14 rating used in shows like Andor, so it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.
