Okay, so this is a bummer. Starbreeze just announced they’re cancelling Project Baxter, that co-op Dungeons and Dragons game we were all looking forward to in 2026. Apparently, after looking at things, the board decided it made more sense to focus all their energy and money on growing the Payday franchise instead. They said resources were “best deployed to accelerate the growth” of Payday, which… yeah, I get it, but still sad news for D&D fans like me!
In a press release, CEO Adolf Kristjansson explained that a tough but essential choice had been made. He stated that their plan is straightforward: Payday is a hugely recognizable brand in gaming, boasting incredible popularity and possibilities. By concentrating their resources and expertise on this title, they aim to speed up development, provide players with more engaging content, and solidify Starbreeze’s leading role in the heist game category. He concluded that this move is about streamlining their efforts to maximize long-term benefits for players, employees, and investors.”
In addition to a non-cash impairment of SEK 255 million (approximately $27.2 million), Starbreeze is shifting members of the Project Baxter team to work on other initiatives, “with a strong focus on Payday.” The company also announced to GameDeveloper that around 44 contractors and employees will be laid off, though the “precise number” remains uncertain as union discussions are scheduled for the coming weeks.
While in development using Unreal Engine 5, Project Baxter hadn’t yet been publicly shown with gameplay or given an official name. It was planned as another game that would be continuously updated with new content, and the company’s CEO at the time, Tobias Sjogren, believed that Dungeons & Dragons and Starbreeze were a perfect match.
Regarding Payday 3, which has struggled since its September 2023 release, even with several updates and fixes, this news is significant. Starbreeze Studios also recently encountered criticism due to its new DLC subscription plan and increased price for the Infamous Collection for Payday 2. We’ll continue to provide updates as they become available.
