Starfield Free Lanes and Terran Armada – 15 Things You Need to Know

Bethesda Game Studios has revealed details about Starfield’s major new update, “Free Lanes,” and its second story expansion, Terran Armada. Both will be available on April 7th for all platforms, including the recently announced PlayStation 5 version, giving both newcomers and returning players a reason to explore the Settled Systems again. Let’s take a look at some of the key features, starting with…

Terran Armada

The second story expansion for the game has been announced, and it introduces a new group called the Terran Armada, as hinted at during the game’s anniversary celebration. The Armada’s origins are unknown, but they’ve been broadcasting messages across the galaxy, claiming the people have lost their identity and that the Armada will restore it. Their forces are mostly made up of robots, but you’ll also encounter some human soldiers, led by Admiral Ode Balewa. As expected, the update includes new armor, weapons, and ships, along with a new type of mission called Incursions.

Enemy Modifiers

The new Free Lanes update not only introduces new enemy types, but also adds special abilities, called modifiers, to existing enemies. These modifiers can change how enemies behave – for example, some might occasionally avoid damage, or become more dangerous when defeated, boosting nearby allies. We don’t yet know how many different modifiers there will be, but they’re a welcome addition that will make combat more interesting and challenging, encouraging players to use their abilities strategically. Plus, players will also appreciate some upcoming improvements to how powers work, which we’ll cover later.

New Crew Members

Free Lanes just got more fun with new crewmates! You can now recruit characters like the Model G or a mini-bot – think of it as a customizable robot pet. While they’re not built for fighting, you can change their personalities and swap gear. Of course, that won’t stop you from sending them into battle to annoy enemies!

You can now add Muria to your crew in New Atlantis, and enjoy her unique sense of humor throughout your journey. The Terran Armada expansion also introduces another new crew member, though details are currently limited to avoid revealing too much of the story.

The Moon Jumper

A new ground vehicle has been added to help you get around planets more easily. Unlike the Rev-8, the Moon Jumper is designed for climbing and jumping thanks to its jet boosters. This makes it simpler to navigate challenging terrain and even get a good view from above. You won’t be able to buy this vehicle – instead, you’ll find it by exploring the world, which encourages you to check out new locations and encounters. Plus, you can customize its appearance with different paints and modifications.

New Encounters, Points of Interest and Variety

The Moon Jumper is just one of the new things players will find in the Free Lanes update. Along with it come new encounters, dungeons, and a significant boost to variety – something many players felt was lacking on Starfield’s randomly generated planets. But what about exploring space itself?

Cruise Control

Bethesda wanted to make traveling in space more enjoyable, and one of the biggest issues was that going between planets felt like just waiting through a loading screen. Now, with Free Lanes, you can actually travel between planets within a star system using Cruise Mode. Your ship will speed up as you approach a planet – you can choose from four different speeds! Even better, you can put the ship on autopilot and do other things, like chat with your crew or manage your equipment, while a compass shows you how far you have left to go. There’s a smooth transition as you get close, but no more loading screens while using Free Lanes. Landing and taking off still work the same way, but this is a significant improvement.

Close Encounters of the Free Lane Kind

As you travel between planets, you’ll come across interesting things to investigate, like strange anomalies. These can lead to shipwrecks containing valuable items. Bethesda appears to be leaving a lot for players to find on their own. This new system, where encounters happen within star systems rather than just around planets, makes space feel much more expansive and real.

Additional Perspective While Flying

Okay, so for ages now, players like me have been asking for a better view when we’re flying around, especially in those big ships. We used to only have two camera options, but with the new Free Lanes update, Bethesda’s added a third, and it’s a huge improvement. Honestly, even if you’re not rocking a massive ship, it gives you way more room to see everything happening around you when you’re just cruising along – spotting those little details and points of interest is so much easier now.

Outpost Improvements and Database

Want to customize your crafting benches with different faction styles? How about a new Milliewhale pet? Or collectible figures that give you bonuses, similar to the Bobbleheads from Fallout? There are also improved habitats. But the biggest changes are to your outposts! You can now easily share resources between them with cross-outpost storage. Even better, the new Database, found in the start menu, tracks everything you’ve discovered – resources, recipes, locations, and all your outposts – making it much faster to travel between them. And if that wasn’t enough, you can finally unlock a base inside a hollowed-out asteroid!

To Be X Tech

The arrival of the Terran Armada brings new challenges, but also a new resource called X Tech. You can find X Tech in various locations, including from defeating bosses in dungeons. Combine it with Credits to try for powerful Legendary Modifiers on your gear. These modifiers have four ranks, and the highest rank unlocks unique benefits that can change how you play. For example, Bloodthirsty restores health when you defeat enemies, Kismet gives you a chance to significantly increase your ammo capacity when reloading, and Saboteur can instantly destroy robots – which is especially useful against the Terran Armada. Importantly, these Legendary Ranks aren’t limited to weapons; you can apply them to armor and other gear too.

New Quality Levels

There’s more! Weapons now come in two higher qualities – Superior and Exceptional. These improve a weapon’s damage and worth, making it even more powerful. While it’s a simple stat increase, it lets you upgrade weapons past the Legendary level.

Upgrade Modules

Upgrade Modules are completely new items you can find in the Free Lanes. They’re simple stat boosts, but instead of improving multiple areas, each one focuses on a single stat like accuracy, fire rate, or damage. The best part? You don’t need to spend any resources to use them – just equip them and immediately improve your weapon.

New Ship Modules

Ships deserve upgrades too, and luckily, the Free Lanes provide a way to get them. Enemy ships sometimes drop blueprints for new modules, such as the EM Pulse Shielding, which can disable enemy shields within a 1500-meter radius with an EMP blast. Another option is the Evasive Stealth Drive – boosting with this module will camouflage your ship, making it harder for enemies to lock on.

X Tech lets you improve various parts of your ship, including its durability, storage space, and how quickly weapons recharge. You can customize it to fit your playstyle.

Quantum Entanglement Device

In Starfield, New Game+ lets you continue your character’s story after finishing the main game, but previously, you lost all your items and money. This meant losing powerful weapons or gear you’d spent a long time collecting. Now, with the new Free Lanes update, a device called the Quantum Entanglement Device lets you bring some of your favorite items into a New Game+ run. While not everything can be transferred, weapons and armor are included. Plus, if you didn’t enjoy revisiting locations to upgrade your Starborn powers, you can now use Quantum Essence to do so. You’ll earn Quantum Essence more easily – like by defeating Starborn ships – and you can even set it as a favorite for quick access during battles.
