Today, a substantial update for “Starfield” was rolled out, primarily focusing on minor adjustments. Yet, this release has sparked conversations within the community due to the emergence of code references hinting at the potential development of a much-anticipated aspect: traveling between planets. While mods have filled the gap in space travel for “Starfield” thus far, it seems the development team might be contemplating the introduction of an authentic interplanetary travel feature.
As a devoted Starfield enthusiast, I stumbled upon a Reddit post on r/Starfield suggesting that interplanetary travel might be integrated into the game with an upcoming update. Intriguingly, certain lines found within PSC scripting files hint at a “cruise mode.” These lines seem to check if this cruise mode is activated and also identify triggers for when a spacecraft reaches or enters “cruise mode.

Although many players eagerly anticipate the possibility of interplanetary travel in the game, Bethesda has not yet guaranteed this feature for future content updates. It seems that, following some fan disappointment over missing features at launch, the developers are being cautious and want to make sure they can deliver on expanded travel capabilities before publicly disclosing any progress made towards achieving it.
At present, travel between planets in Starfield isn’t instant or smooth. Instead, players encounter loading screens when transitioning to new locations, which can disrupt the sense of freedom and immersion in the game’s vast universe for some dedicated Starfield fans.
Although Bethesda hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, there are still other compelling factors, apart from this coding find, that keep fans optimistic about the potential inclusion of this feature in the game at some point.
In 2024, a game modification named Astrogate was introduced, demonstrating that the idea could work. This mod includes faster-than-light (FTL) travel, enabling players to set the speed of their spaceship as it traverses through space. Additionally, it offers an Autopilot function, giving players the choice of how they wish to spend their time while their ship journeys towards its destination.
From what data miners have unearthed in the code, it doesn’t provide a clear picture of how the official version of the feature might appear. Nevertheless, with terms like “cruise” and “arrival,” it appears that the current attempt at the feature involves players plotting their destination within a pre-scripted event. The mention of the phrase “far travel” distinct from the usual “fast travel” experienced by gamers suggests that the feature could be more comprehensive than Starfield players might anticipate.
Although the references are present in the code, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be included in the game. The features could have been tested but subsequently discarded, or they might be linked to a different feature entirely. Nevertheless, the possibility of this long-awaited feature being officially added to the game is intriguing. If fans show enough excitement about it, there’s a chance their enthusiasm could persuade the developers to fully implement and release it.
