Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 9 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “300th Night.” The show has been hinting at a connection to a famous Star Trek episode from the original series, and what seemed like simple references are now clearly building towards something bigger. The Paramount+ series appears to be directly setting up a significant follow-up. If the show succeeds, it could be a fantastic tribute to classic Star Trek. However, it’s a risky move that could also fall flat.
Since the very beginning of Starfleet Academy, a recurring joke has been woven throughout the show. Steven Colbert’s character, the Digital Dean, constantly comments on a background story that initially seems like a nod to Star Trek: Voyager. However, the joke also subtly echoes themes from The Original Series. Though this storyline has sometimes taken a backseat to more pressing events, the ninth episode, “300th Night,” subtly hints at what’s to come.
The Dean’s Recent Talaxian Furfly Update Perfectly Sets Up “The Trouble With Tribbles” Sequel

NBC
Though set nearly a thousand years apart – Star Trek: The Original Series in the 23rd century and Starfleet Academy in the 32nd – the newer show has still managed to pay tribute to the series that began in 1966. While it hasn’t always been obvious, the repeated references to Specialist Krebs’ Talaxian Furfly are more than just Easter eggs referencing the Delta Quadrant. The Furfly, recently awakened from hibernation, has exhibited bizarre behavior – attempting to mate with lab equipment, consuming its own fur, and ultimately becoming aggressive towards a technician in Science Lab 7. This entire incident has only been announced over the Academy’s speaker system; no one has actually seen it happen.
In the episode “300th Night,” the Dean completes the setup for the Furfly to become the new Tribble – a replacement no one even knew was needed. He claims Krebs’ pet has gotten loose and infiltrated the replicator system. Unlike the original Tribbles in “The Trouble with Tribbles,” which reproduced naturally and quickly, Starfleet Academy is taking a different approach. They’re using the replicators to create endless copies of the same Furfly. So, even though the Furfly couldn’t reproduce with the lab equipment, it seems to have found a way to multiply unintentionally.
How the Imminent Slew of Replicated Furflies Can Influence ‘Starfleet Academy’ Season 1’s Finale

Paramount+
The recent episode, “300th Night,” builds towards a major conclusion, making a lighthearted tribute to the famously quirky Star Trek episode “The Trouble With Tribbles” seem unlikely. With the Federation facing a huge number of Omega mines and the Athena spaceship severely damaged, introducing the troublesome Furflies would feel out of place. However, this new take on the classic Tribble story at Starfleet Academy promises to be much more serious than the original, and it will probably help the heroes instead of hindering them.
As a huge movie fan, I was really gripped by Captain Ake’s decision to abandon the Athena. It wasn’t a reckless move, but a desperate attempt to escape those Venari Ral attackers! And she’s fiercely determined to reclaim it – it’s not just a ship, but a significant part of the Academy back in San Francisco. Honestly, I was wondering how she’d pull that off without any help from the Federation, but the Furflies surprisingly offer a pretty clear path forward. It’s a clever twist!
We can safely guess the Furfly-containing lab is on the USS Athena. If that’s true, the part of the ship Ake discarded is likely about to be swarmed by agitated, breeding alien insects. This is different from Tribbles, which multiplied quickly but remained calm. Therefore, when the Venari Ral celebrate recovering the Athena’s rear section, they’ll almost certainly be attacked by the Furflies in the Season 1 finale, giving Ake and her crew a much better opportunity to repair their ship and succeed. And if the Furflies are actually located in the ship’s main saucer section, the next episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy could be particularly exciting for Captain Ake and her team.
