Stargate Showrunner Blasts Amazon Reboot Cancellation (& Fans Have the Perfect Response)

Fans of Stargate were disappointed to learn on Tuesday that Amazon has cancelled the planned reboot of the series, less than a year after announcing its development for Prime Video. The new series was being created by Martin Gero, a writer for both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, and now Joseph Mallozzi, who also worked as a showrunner on those series, is sharing his thoughts.

Mallozzi announced on X that Amazon has cancelled the new series. While he couldn’t share many details about the cancellation, he praised the work of writer Geno Barillaro, who spent two years developing a way to make the show appealing to both new and existing fans.

According to writer Mallozzi, the creator, Martin Gero, spent over two years developing a new Stargate series. The goal was to create something that both new and longtime fans would enjoy, staying true to the spirit of the original shows. Mallozzi praised the series for capturing the action, adventure, and emotional connections that made Stargate special, and avoiding the mistakes of many recent reboots. The show was officially approved in November 2025, but unfortunately, the project has now been cancelled. We won’t have the chance to share this new Stargate world and its characters – new and old – with audiences.

Mallozzi clarified that the cancelled reboot is a significant disappointment for fans of Stargate. Because Amazon owns the rights, the show can’t be pitched to other streaming services, and the story Gero developed likely won’t be told through any other medium.

Fans Already Have The Perfect Response to Stargate’s Cancellation

News about the cancellation of Stargate suggests Amazon executives feared the new version wouldn’t attract viewers beyond existing fans. This seems to contradict comments from producer Joseph Mallozzi, who believed the show would have been accessible to new audiences. Despite the cancellation, fans are already discussing how to react to Amazon’s future plans for the franchise, if any.

A fan account pretending to be a character online warned that if the studio tries to revive Stargate with something awkward and geared towards current trends, they’ll create their own content on platforms like YouTube or a podcast to criticize it.

They stated that if AmaSlopStudios revives Stargate with a director who caters too much to current trends and negatively impacts the show, they will create a YouTube channel or podcast dedicated to thoroughly criticizing the new version.

If Amazon Does Ever Pursue a Different Stargate Reboot, They Will Have a Lot To Prove to Fans

It’s currently unknown if Amazon plans to revisit the Stargate franchise in a new way, but the strong fan reaction suggests they risk losing audience support if they do. Many fans have expressed disappointment with the cancellation and believe Amazon is making a mistake by potentially ignoring its existing fanbase.

As a longtime Stargate fan, I’m really disappointed with what Amazon is doing. It feels like they’re throwing out everything we love about the show to try and attract a completely new audience. It’s frustrating because it seems like they don’t understand that you grow a fanbase by building on what already works and respecting the people who have been with the series all along. Honestly, it feels like a really big mistake to alienate those of us who’ve been loyal for years.
