As a longtime fan of the “Starship Troopers” franchise, I can confidently say that the recent developments have been nothing short of exhilarating! The release of “Starship Troopers: Extermination” and now “Starship Troopers: Continuum” has truly revitalized my love for this universe.
Approximately a month has passed since the launch of the multiplayer FPS game “Starship Troopers: Extermination”, and fans of the franchise have been treated to another game. This time, it’s a VR game called “Starship Troopers: Continuum”. Just as Casper Van Dien, who played the lead in Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film, is expected to contribute voice-over work for the upcoming single-player aspect of “Extermination”, he has provided his voice and likeness for “Continuum”.
In a chat, Van Dien joined Chris Killian for a discussion about the VR game he created, sharing insights from both its production and playthrough. Subsequently, they delved into possible future space-themed journeys for the actor, such as a revival series on a prominent streaming platform.
Killian asked, “Given the trend of high-budget legacy sequels, I was wondering if there have been discussions about a big budget Starship Troopers sequel… It seems to me that it’s more relevant today than it has been in a while.” Van Dien responded, “Indeed, there’s been a revival of interest in Starship Troopers, even beyond the smaller films we made. I believe it’s because of the video games and ongoing popularity of Starship Troopers, Extermination, and now Continuum.
Later on, Van Dien explored the enduring influence of Verhoeven’s ’90s masterpiece, as he expressed: “It seems that more and more people are rewatching this movie. Regrettably, the social critique presented in it remains applicable today. This, I believe, is a testament to the skill of the filmmaker [Verhoeven], as his work continues to resonate.
A Still-Relevant Classic & Potentially Expanding Upon It
Afterward, the actor shared insights into an earlier endeavor to resurrect General Johnny Rico. More specifically, it involved a Robert Rodriguez series called “Old Man Rico,” but much like the Syfy remake of Tremors in 2017, this project remained unrealized (even though the Tremors remake had a pilot filmed before the series was canceled).

Despite the passage of time, Van Dien remains optimistic about the project and sees a viable opportunity. He has been actively attempting to grab Sony’s attention by promoting the idea of a remake or TV series adaptation of “Starship Troopers” on his streams. In his view, it would make an excellent series given today’s advanced visual effects. If Sony were to create a series from this franchise, it would be a significant achievement for them, as Van Dien has observed growing interest at various conventions. The lead actor himself is not only interested but genuinely excited about the prospect. As he put it: “Why wouldn’t you make this? It’d be fantastic.
The sci-fi action game “Starship Troopers: Continuum” can currently be played on the Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S, and Meta Quest 2 devices, while it will also become accessible for PlayStation VR2 users on November 25th, 2024.
