Recent reports suggest that *State of Decay 3* is still some time away from release, offering Xbox Series X and PC players a potential timeframe for the long-awaited zombie game. Announced in 2020, the game went quiet for four years. While a second trailer dropped in 2024, a firm release date remained elusive. It seems development is still ongoing, and fans will have to wait longer for more news.
According to Xbox insider Jez Corden, a highly anticipated game won’t be released in 2026 as some fans hoped. Corden responded to a question on X (formerly Twitter) stating the current target release window is 2027. While he didn’t explicitly say so, it appears Xbox has decided to invest more resources into the game’s development. This report contains further details.
Worries It Could Be Cancelled
Corden also pointed out that these concerns might not significantly impact Microsoft CFO Amy Hood’s financial forecasts. He previously reported that Hood has set extremely challenging financial goals for Xbox. If true, this could lead to more Xbox game cancellations and studio closures. Given the apparent difficulties in developing *State of Decay 3*, it’s likely that both the game and its developer, Undead Labs, are currently under close scrutiny from Microsoft.
According to Corden, while the project has received more funding and is seen as important internally, he doubts it will significantly impact Amy Hood’s financial forecasts. He believes Hood isn’t concerned about the negative effects cancelling games has on the Xbox brand.
2027 Release Date
With a potential release date of 2027, it’s unlikely we’ll see *State of Decay 3* at either The Game Awards this December or the Xbox Developer_Direct in January – the latter of which will feature *Fable*. The earliest we might get a glimpse of the game is at the Xbox Games Showcase in June. This assumes the 2027 release is firm, as Xbox likely won’t show the game again until they’re confident it’s on track. The last update we received was in the spring, and it indicated the game would also be available on PlayStation 5, alongside PC and Xbox.
