Steam Controller launch might be imminent as Valve uploads ‘secret’ unboxing video

Brad Lynch noticed a recent Steam update included a video of the Steam Controller being unboxed. However, the video is encrypted and can’t be played, though its filename reveals what it contains.

The unboxing video will reveal what’s inside the box, including a small, disc-shaped device used to connect and charge the Steam Controller. It will likely also explain how to set up the controller and demonstrate how well it works with games that usually need a mouse and keyboard.

The recent and sustained high prices for RAM, often called ‘RAMageddon’, have pushed back the release of the Steam Machine and Steam Frame – the key products announced as part of Steam Hardware in November 2025. However, the Steam Controller isn’t affected as much by these price issues, leading to speculation that Valve might release it sooner than planned.

I’m seeing something from Twitter on this page, and it looks like they need my permission to show it. Apparently, Twitter uses cookies and stuff, so they’re asking before loading anything. If I click ‘Accept and continue,’ it’ll let Twitter do its thing and display the content.

A recent unboxing video and shipping information suggest Valve has received a significant number of wireless controllers, making the possibility of their release seem likely.

Hey, so this page includes stuff from Twitter! They want me to ask before showing it because Twitter uses cookies and things like that to keep track of things. If I want to see the tweets and everything, I need to click ‘Accept and continue’ – that lets Twitter do its thing and show me the content.

Valve is facing setbacks with delays and rising costs, so a positive publicity moment would be very welcome. Releasing the Steam Controller before the Steam Machine could encourage more gamers to try SteamOS and become invested in that system.

The Steam Controller is already gaining praise, with some developers highlighting its trackpads as being similar to those on the Steam Deck and even comparing them to those found on Macs.

The Steam Controller isn’t the only popular Valve product people are excited about. A developer working on Godot XR has also been using one for months to prepare the Godot game engine for release.

If you’re familiar with the Steam Deck, the Steam Controller will feel very similar – think of it as a Steam Deck, but without the built-in screen.

Good news! Valve is aiming to launch all of its Steam hardware within the first six months of this year. Releasing the Steam Controller sooner might help ease any frustration if there are delays with the Steam Deck and other hardware.
