Steam Deck 2 Might be Coming Out in 2028 – Rumor

Despite Valve’s public statements against working on a Steam Deck successor, recent reports suggest they might be aiming for a 2028 release for a next-generation handheld gaming PC. Reliable leaker KeplerL2 shared this information on the NeoGAF forums, also noting that current memory supply issues could push back the timeline. However, a delay could also allow Valve to include more powerful components, as the new device likely won’t use a custom-designed chip.

According to KeplerL2, the initial target for the new console was 2028, but issues with RAM and NAND storage could push that date back. Because the console doesn’t have a custom-designed processor like the PlayStation 6 or Xbox, a delay might actually allow for improved hardware specifications.

The Steam Deck, released in February 2022, has been a hit for Valve. Falling memory prices have actually increased demand, and now Valve is struggling to keep up with orders.

The handheld device uses a powerful AMD processor with four cores, built on the Zen 2 architecture and capable of handling multiple tasks at once. Its speed varies between 2.4 and 3.5 GHz, automatically adjusting based on what you’re doing. It also features an AMD graphics processor with eight processing units, running between 1 and 1.6 GHz. The device has 16 GB of fast memory, and the speed of that memory – either 5500 MT/s or 6400 MT/s – depends on whether you have the LCD or OLED screen version.

Valve isn’t planning to release new Steam Deck models every year. Instead, they’re waiting for significant advancements in hardware technology – not just faster processors, but also improvements in power efficiency – before creating a next-generation device. Valve designer Lawrence Yang explained in October 2024 that yearly updates wouldn’t be beneficial.

We’ve intentionally moved away from releasing a new Steam Deck model every year, as we want to avoid making small, incremental upgrades that don’t offer significant improvements for our customers. Instead, we’re focusing on a major overhaul – a ‘generational leap’ in processing power – without compromising battery life. We’re excited about the next generation Steam Deck and are actively working on it, but we’ll release it when it truly offers a substantial upgrade, not just an annual refresh.

Recently, the company has been focused on launching the Steam Machine, Steam Deck (formerly Steam Frame), and the new Steam Controller, first shown in November 2025. Although a firm release date hasn’t been announced, they’re still aiming for a 2026 launch. In a recent update for developers, they said they’ll share more details as plans are finalized. The delays are mainly due to difficulties getting enough memory and storage.
