Steam is planning to release new hardware in 2026, but details about the next version of the Steam Deck have been scarce. Valve has previously said they don’t want to make the original Steam Deck outdated too soon, so a 2026 release seemed unlikely. However, a recent leak has worried fans about how much longer they might have to wait for the new model.
A source familiar with Valve’s plans, known as KeplerL2 on NeoGAF, claims the Steam Deck 2 was initially targeted for release in 2028. However, the launch might be pushed back because of rising costs for RAM and storage. These price increases are linked to high demand for these components from AI data centers.
Steam Deck 2 Might Release Later Than 2028
A NeoGAF user named Slimboy Fat believes the future looks bleak, suggesting there aren’t any promising new technologies that would meet Valve’s needs for a next-generation Steam Deck. Another user, Diffusionx, thinks Valve might stop making hardware altogether due to the challenges of the current market.
It’s hard to predict exactly how hardware costs will change in the next few years. However, KeplerL2 believes there’s a potential benefit to the delay of the Steam Deck 2. Unlike most consoles, it won’t use a specially made chip, so the extra time could allow for improved performance when it finally launches.
There Are Other Options In The Meantime
If the most optimistic predictions are correct, those hoping for a Steam Deck 2 might need to consider other options for now. While the original Steam Deck is still available for new buyers, all models are currently sold out. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 offers a powerful alternative, with much better performance than the original Switch. Plus, companies like ASUS and Lenovo are creating their own handheld gaming PCs, such as the ASUS ROG Ally, which is also branded with Xbox features.
Valve has ambitious plans for the year ahead, including the launch of the Steam Machine, a new Steam Controller, and the Steam Frame VR headset. Even though they primarily make money from selling software, Valve is diving back into creating hardware, and a Steam Deck 2 could be their next product. However, it might take a while before it’s actually available.
