Valve has responded to long-time requests from Steam Deck users by adding a much-needed quality-of-life feature. Since the handheld PC launched in 2022, Valve has consistently improved it with both hardware revisions – like the Steam Deck OLED – and regular software updates. The latest update delivers an improvement that many feel should have been included from the start.
Okay, so this is awesome! Steam Deck just got a big update – now my downloads don’t need the screen to stay on anymore. Before, if I wanted to download a game or update, I had to leave the screen on, which was super annoying if I wanted to actually put the Deck to sleep or turn it off. But now? I can start a download, turn off the screen, and it’ll keep going in the background! Valve finally let us download stuff while the Deck is basically sleeping. It’s a small change, but it makes a huge difference.
Valve has added a new feature to the Steam Deck: if you press the power button while something is downloading, it will now ask if you want to continue the download with the screen turned off. If you choose to continue, the Steam Deck will enter a low-power download mode. It will also automatically switch to this mode after being idle for a short time.

So, Valve’s adding a new feature to the Steam Deck that’s going to be on by default, which is cool. But if I decide I don’t want it running, I can easily switch it off in the Power settings. It’s nice they’re giving us that control!
This Steam Deck update probably won’t convince those who don’t already own one to buy it, but it’s a great improvement and shows Valve is paying attention to what its users want. We hope to see more features like this in the future as Valve works on the next version of the Steam Deck.
